Default 1990 da build/restoration

Had a 1991 that i was trying to bring back from the dead, then it got hit and totalled. so i bought a theft recovered 1990 and starting tearing the 1991 down.

ill need the parts off the totaled da so I can replace almost everything on this 1990 I picked up.

its a 1990 with a 93 front end, 94 ls motor, dc headers, tanabi cat-back, tokico blues, i also picked up some new coilover sleeves, extended tophats, and a ton of other stuff. gave the kid the headlights back before i took the car.
im also going to swap the side mouldings because I hate the way the body color pained ones look.
threw together this relay setup for the front bumper lights

there are some bottlecap wheels I am refinishing in case you havent seen them,

here they are pre-rouge

after high-speed rouge

got nearly new headlight brackets and some flush screws and washers, amber corners also.

interior in its prime after i finish the ultimate cleaning.

sewed up a shift boot and am messing around with some interior ideas now that i have a spare interior.

the headlight housings were trash so i salvaged the lights and and going to put them in the fresh housings i have.

my nardi woodgrain, going to tape off the metal and start refinishing the wood.

going to pull the motor and trans from the 91 and refinish/freshen them up.

pulled most of the engine bay brackets and sand blasted/painted them.

any exposed fastener will be replaced with a flush head.

got the motor pulled and refinished with all new gaskets

going to paint the dc headers i have in the same black that i painted the stock manifold. and im not going to paint the block as that will take away from the casting marks and imperfections that i would like to keep.

got the cf hood off the car untill i can repair it as its in rough shape, put on the 91s doors, hood, ps fender, and the drivers fender moulding, hatch. the 90 will be getting its b18b pulled and the fresher 18a put in. then the shave tuck ect will take place over the winter.

already installed the new headlamp brackets, and factory lights.

stripped the interior out of the 90, getting it ready for a full rebuild to factory specs.

also got the factory airbox inlet installed.

more updates to follow as soon as the 15 wait period is over.

got the motor pulled earlier this week, got the power steering cooler pulled too, i will be adding a new external cooler as well when i get the power steering all fitted back in.

the motor will be taken down to the bare block, prob new rings and everything that goes with that...

the bay will be degreased tomorrow, it will be a pain in the *** but im going to try and paint the suspension too.

after the cleaning of the bay, i will be bolting the motor and tranny together with a new gripforce press plate, disk, both bearings, spring, and flywheel.
this is clearly the motor that will be going into bay, after i complete the scrub down.

just a cleaning of this extent will get the bay close to where i want it to be so i can start the tuck this winter.

started scrubbing the bay down today, got alot of grease off of the lower parts of the bay, also there was cv boot grease all over the lower control arms.

time to hand wipe clean all of the streaks, paint and hit all of the rubber with some dressing.

so i recieved the last parts of the puzzle to start getting the b18a into the 90 da.

gripforce hd clutch kit with flywheel.

honda release bearing spring

on a side note, this is the b18b that came in the 90 when i bought it.

I will start a seperate thread for this motor, I removed the crank yesterday, all the journals look very clean, the mains and the connecting rod bearings all look decent, but the pistons and connecting rods will be new with all new bearings.
the idea i have for the motor is n/a with nitrous.

-bore to 82mm
-82mm high comp NPR pistons
-CX Hbeam forged connecting rods
-hastings rings and skirts
-b20b? or b18? head port matched (no VTEC)
-crower stage 1 cams

still up in the air about what exact specs are going to be with the motor build
but id like to raise the comp to around 11:1, but to achieve that compresion I think I will have to go with a b18 head with all upgraded valvetrain components. Im not going to bore the block over 82mm and I believe the b20b head will loose compression being that the head is designed for an 84mm bore but hell thats what trial and error is for!

the b18a that i freshened up will be going in for reliability as it has less than 90k and ran great as a daily when it was in the 91.

The goal is to drive it with that motor in it as i work on suspension, body work, getting it 100% complete, i mean 100% and the whole time im doing that, slowly build the b18b motor with forged internals and a built up head with cams, HV oil pump, just make a really strong motor. It seems so many swaps out therem that its wierder to keep the stock motor. plus i really enjoy the way the motor and transmission combination drives.

got the motor in the 90 today. now just to finalize the routing of the engine bay, get the radiator in and the hoses ran. The valve cover is a spare off the other motor, as the chains did a pretty good job scraping them up, the good valve cover will be goin on after everything is ready to fire. The header is painted wrinkle ht, the same as the valve cover. well see how it holds up.

there is plenty more to do, I have every bracket painted ready to go on, also all the stainless flush hardware for the bay, the power steering and coolant overflow, factory airbox(k&n), and battery. and a ton of little things like painting the pressure hose bracket on the pump black.

I also installed the shifter bushing kit today and the shortthrow shifter and sandblasted and painted the linkage. i am going to start prepping the undercarraige for some rust removal/prevention hopefully try to reverse the northeast life this car has lived.

well got the motor buttoned up, started it and got it in time, the headers smoked for a little bit as the paint cured, other than that it runs mint, no leaks or any funny stuff going on. used syncromesh in the transmission and drove it around the block, felt really nice with the new clutch and fresh shifter bushings.

lots of detailing in the bay, and in general, still alot left to do, but the motors in and its runs really nice.

next up:

swapping all engine brackets
finding and polishing anything that needs it in the bay
install flush head bolts and washers
make a nice double ground for the valve cover
"push" slim fan
install horns
loom wiring
move battery to trunk
dash swap
remove int harness.

fall 2013 should be the season for tucking and shaving.

Looking good man!
What suspension do you have?
And why are you swapping the dash? What's wrong with the one in the car?

thanks man, the suspension was just a temporary fix for now as the springs that were in the car were heated and cracked in about 15 places. they are just some cheap top hat extenders with some sleeves. put them on some stock shocks that has very low miles. its actually rides much better than I thought it would.

Im replacing the dash as I have a completely mint one from the 91, and the one in the car now is cut in a few places and has 3 broken mounting tabs....cant have that!!!
