pan gasket
Hi guys -
I'll be replacing the pan gasket on my GF's 90 Accord EX this weekend. Did a search and read a bunch of threads on the task, but didn't come across this:
I'm working from a Hayne's manual (not impressed), and they mention as part of the process to remove the oil pick-up tube. Reading further on in their tutorial - of course - they don't mention reinstalling it'
I'll admit up front I'm a small block Chevy guy - this Honda stuff is all new to me. But looking at the pictures in the book I don't see where the oil pump pickup has anything to do with the pan gasket seal.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light so I know what to expect.
Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't need to take the pickup tube off, unless you wanted to change its gasket or clean it. I just replaced my pan and my gasket; the pan cause it was warped (check yours for warpage). What you wanna do is take off the downpipe and the center beam, then you will be able to reach all the bolts. Unscrew the gagillion bolts from the pan and remove it. Carefully and thoroughly clean both the pan and the block, make sure no oil or liquid gasket is on it and it is clean. You don't need any gasket maker on the gasket unless you wanna hold it to the pan, some recommend spray adhesive for this. The official Honda manual page is right here for the completion of the job. Be careful NOT to torque the bolts too much; I would say don't use a torque wrench either unless its the electric type. Someone even said to use 8 Ft lbs not 10. I just did this job with a clicker type wrench and it ended up being too tight so that the gasket was bulging out (its not supposed to bulge out).
Here is the all hallowed Honda manual for installing pan and gasket:

And here is the torque sequence:

Here's a guide from another site too:

Hope this helps, it should.
