98 accord, opinions please
Well all you honda guys, I need some opinions. My girlfriends car (98 accord, vtec 4cyl) randomly killed on me while driving. No sputtering or anything, just noticed the car slowing down and realized it died out. Pulled over and tried to start it and it would just turn over. Changed the ignition switch already. Im not getting any spark at the plugs. I did put a test light on the coil and did have power, just not sure if this means its still good, or what. I am by no means a mechanic, but am mechanically inclined and can figure most things out with a little guidance. Should I just buy a new distributor cap, rotor and coil and hope it works? Is there another simple basic test that average joe can do? Trying not to buy un necessary parts as of tight times. ANY advice would be greatlyyy appreciated! Thanks guys, Neil
Cool, now you can diagnose... make sure it gets 12 volts with ignition on. A shop or Haynes manual is best if you need exact instructions
Otherwise throw in a new distributor. It that doesn't work then return it.

Does it require an RFID Key? Does the Green Key symbol blank when your starting? Not sure if you have this, or not but its a safety feature that comes stock with a lot of the accords of that generation.
You should download the CB7 shop manual and follow the diagnostic procedures if you want to find out exactly what's wrong. The engines between the 5th and 6th gen accords aren't too different.

Today I am borrowing a code reader to see if its throwing anything. (Had CEL before so im not sure) I had the ignition module tested at autozone and it showed up bad which is why I bought another
Really? How many no start conditions have you actually fixed on a 5th or 6th gen Accord? You have the OP throwing parts at the car......
I put my money on it being an ignitor issue. It will not throw any codes and it can actually test OK and still be the problem. There is really no need to replace an entire distributor when you can individually diagnose the parts. A cheap $70 reman distributor is more than likely to fail again in a few months/year anyway. Cheap components that frequently fail out of the box!
The procedures for testing the ignition and distributor components is the same between the 4th, 5th & 6th gen from what I have worked on. However I would opt for downloading the CD Accord PDF manual over the POS CB PDF that is out there.

So when it comes to the procedure for testing the CYP - the 4,5, and 6 gens are the same. Same place.same location same readings
You know the answer as well as I do
Where is the sensor on the 4th, 5th gen (94,95) vs the 98 4 cyl's....that was/is my point.
Have a good day
