Aftermarket exhaust - Paying for the name?
I'm getting an aftermarket exhaust, and I fell in love with the sound of the Skunk2 Megapower. Borla doesn't compare to the sound I want. But a mechanic buddy of mine found a catback exhaust kit WITH headers on ebay, and since then I have found kits for less than half the price of a Skunk2. So. Does the brand make that much of a difference in sound that a cheaper one will sound...well...cheap?
If I bought a Skunk2, am I just paying for the name?

You get what ya pay for when it come to quality of material and fitment. I would avoid junk2 personally but that is just my opinion. If your looking for cheap without sacrificing too much quality. Yonaka make a decent knock off of the Apexi WS-II exhaust. They come in 60mm piping and have a nice mellow tone. I have one on my gsr swapped civic and really like the overall sound. I get complements all the time due to it not being your typical loud *** fart can.
Get a quality muffler and have a shop fab up an exhaust for you. It will be a lot cheaper and higher quality.
I have a dynomax super-turbo, and 2.5" piping, and a few extra resonators and my car is nice and quiet. Can't hear it hardly at all.

I have the yonaka exhaust on my eg hatch with a z6, for under right around $250 i think it does the job, it isn't really loud unless your on the throttle, and even then, it doesn't have the n1 sound to it

Magnaflow or Vibrant make great mufflers. I'd have a muffler shop custom build an exhaust and then use Magnaflow/Vibrant resonators and muffter.
Buying the ebay brands you get what you pay for.
Id take the advice of most anything but the ebay brands....
basically it comes down to your budget, what do you want to spend?
I make it a point to get the best for my budget... if its more than my budget and its a must have... i save till i get it.

Magnaflow was originally what I was going to go with but after hearing the sound clips of the Yonaka, I changed my mind. I was more interested in a inexpensive exhaust that wasn't obnoxious like most honda exhaust since it was only temporary until boosting and upgrading to 3" piping

Ebay mandel bent Cat-Back piping with resonator and a Magnaflow Oval Muffler. Great flow and still quiet.
The Dynomax Super Turbo will be quiet too, but the flow rate of their smaller mufflers may cause a loss in performance at higher RPMS. I base this only on the numbers Dynomax provides (Magnaflow provides none, but their mufflers, except of the XL series, are straight-thru) and calculating (its a rough estimate at best) the amount of exhaust flow from the engine at some arbitrary RPM and throttle %.

My budget is anything. If I want something, I save until I get it. Like with any car parts I buy. I do know after working on my car with even just rotors and brakes, it pays to buy good stuff. I was hesitant about the eBay kit. And now I'm all in a war about what I should get.
I bought an ebay exhause, sounds like a tin can, BUT, i found a piece of pipe the just fits the inside on the can... all the way through, cut it so i could also put the silencer on. Made it louder, but not so ricey. I then drilled a couple holes into the pipe, put it back in and listened to it, and kept drilling a couple more holes at a time and listened to it. Doing that gave it a better/deeper tone. I paid less than $100 for the exaust and was given the pipe, cheap, but sounds decent.
So....what do I have to buy to make my del Sol sound like a Lotus Elise?
Joking aside...the sound outta one of those is to die for.

Skunk2 is just a name, the products themselves are made in China along with a wide variety of other stuff, Skunk2 merely puts their name on it, jacks up the price, and ships it out to you.
If you do a google search for "junk2", you can find some interesting things about that company.
Buy a celica and you can replicate that sound easily.

I'm beginning to take the hint to NOT get a Skunk2. I got out of the idea awhile ago due to price. First world problems: too many exhaust brands to choose from.
And I'm not exactly looking for quiet. I'd like to wake my brother up when I go to the gym in the morning. And I'm kinda in a sound competition with by buddy's Ninja.
Buddy Club Spec II aka hollowed out old skool motorcycle muffler. My buddy found an old bike muffler, took the guts out, now when he passes me on the left side, my ears bleed. Legitly.
If you want loud, just find something with 2.25-2.5 inch piping and a Round Muffler with a 4-4.5 inch tip...then run a test pipe and you should be louder than a Ninja. Used to run 2.25 pipe with a 4 inch tip can muffler and I could barely hear myself think half the time I was driving. Its not fun at all, your friends will think it is cool because they will ride in it every once in a while and not everyday, trust me.
personal experience with the skunk2 exhaust...
the welds at the muffler cracked half way around, the resonator rattles bad, and the exhaust has never been scraped or anything. other than that the metal itself is still shinny and looks good. i only had it for about 6 months before those problems started. i will never buy there exhaust again.

I don't want the exhaust to overpower my 2 12's in my trunk. That much is clear. Maybe. Right now I'm looking for a good brand.
