Y21 B16a w/ clutch pack LSD...it clicked and clunked but it is ok? *PICS INSIDE
Hi Everyone,
I drove this transmission on my B16 for approx two years. During the two years of driving it it always clicked and clunked when turning corners...
I thought for sure the differential was wore out and I swapped in another tranny with an open diff.
Now I am boosted and want to go back to LSD. So yesterday for fun I decided to tear the old transmission apart to see the LSD.
I have researched about 5 hours so far into clutch LSDs, and I haven't seen ANY pictures of what these differentials are supposed to look like new. Here it was mine looks like inside.
-10 bolt final drive gear 66T

Clutch packs:

Spider Gears and Ramp unit:

Everything seems to be in excellent shape to my surprise. I don't see any chatter or cracks or extreme wear..
Was I just using the wrong fluid??? I was using a 90w fluid with some lucas LSD additive back when I was driving with this transmission.
Would shimming the clutch packs 0.020" help during reassembly?? Maybe tighten things back up to account for any wear?
Thanks!
Edit: Is using a clutch type LSD good for high HP DD? I'm making around 450whp and would like to be able to go to the track w/ slicks about once a month.
Edit#2: I should mention that this transmission has been apart before. I could tell from the RTV sealant. So maybe this inst an OEM diff???

Wow...could this be a mugen LSD diff?? After some more research I found these pics on this forum. They look identical to what I have.

Should I be excited? I have no idea right now.

noise during turns are normal with a clutch type lsd. just make sure you use the correct additive and break in the clutches properly.
1/3 tube of Tras X Posi-Lube does wonders for diff clutch chatter.
In my Kaaz LSD I ran Penn. Synchromesh and the additive. Funny they were stocked next to each other at Autozone.
