Default 00 Civic with bad piston rings...mechanic says to replace engine - need input

Hey guys,

So a while ago i came to you asking a question about my engine burning oil. You guys were right, it was the piston rings. My mechanic said its cheaper to replace the engine rather than go through and rebuild. Well, i don't know anything about engines so does that mean i just need a new head? I'm looking to spend probably no more than $700 for whatever i need and then i will get a price for installation. So what do i need, and what is the best i can do for this price?

Thanks!

No, it means you need an engine. The head is part of the engine, you need the whole thing.

pistons are under the head...so you need more then just a new head.
you need to tell us more info...what kind of car, what engine?

Most likely your best bet is low mileage JDM engine shipped over from hmotors
and about 600-1000 to have a shop install it.

^ how handy with wrenches are you?

for 700 you could rebuild all OEM a d16y8...or buy a new low mileage jdm motor
thats with you doing all work though.

without that..yes, your in a bad spot

I'm new with cars, so i'm gonna say that i'm better off buying a complete engine in this case.

with enough research you can get a D16y8 for about $500.

the local junkyards are asking a lot of money for used motors for your car. i would try to find someone who has swapped and is selling their old motor.

i would probably rebuild the motor if all it needs is rings.

i must also mention, buying a used motor off someone is also a gamble. if you get one from a salvage yard, most of them at least have a decent warranty.

Since when is it cheaper to buy a new engine than simply rering the pistons? You can probably get a set of rings for $50ish bucks per cylinder and a head gasket set for 100ish. Just get a car savvy buddy to come help you some weekend and pay him a case of beer lol

Plus, Oil Pan Gasket, Timing Belt, Water Pump, T/B tensioner, Cam Seals, Drive Belts, Oil, Coolant, Connecting Rod Bearings, and Front Crank Seal. That is another $300 or so and of course, labor on top of that.

Engine Importers like Attarco in Richmond and Sacramento, CA have D-series engines with ~60-80K miles for $400-500 and a 6-12 month warranty. I would say its comparable with less labor going into getting another engine.

^^ well a basic timing belt replacement would have to be done on the replacement motor also.

ive done the numbers, more then once. It always works out to just buy a low mile 30-45k engine then to get involved in rebuilding (especially if you aren't doing yourself)

I'd only get the timing belt, drive belts, tensioner, and water pump if they were due for a change anyway. Cam seals come with the head gasket set (at least the Fel-Pro one). Oil Pan Gasket, Bearings and Crank Seal(s) are all dirt cheap on rockauto.com. Oil and Coolant are a given, I have that stuff sitting around my garage anyway.
