Default 2002 Accord LX burning oil after fresh rebuild

A friend of mine and I just rebuilt the motor in my 2002 Accord LX. The car still burns about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I can't find any oil leaks. It doesn't seem to be smoking. I parked it and let it run for 30 minutes to see if it was leaking oil while being driven.

I had the cylinders bored and we followed specs on piston ring alignments.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you do a compression test yet? Try revving the engine up at idle and look at the tailpipe to see if there is purple smoke. Maybe your rings haven't seated yet. Did you properly break in the rings? Some people suggest (almost religiously) to break in the rings by running the car hard. They say that's the best way to do it. How did you run your car for the first 500 miles, hard or did you baby it?

I feel for ya man, I just had my 91' engine rebuilt too. There was a leak in mine at the oil pan. Replaced the warped oil pan with a new one and put a new gasket on it and so far no leaks at all. You could have an oil leak. Try inspecting the bottom of the engine to the T, jack it up and look underneath.

He said every 1,000 miles it burns a quart so at least 1,000 miles. By then the rings would have already seated (had he broken them in correctly).

Thanks for the questions and feedback.

I didn't "run it hard" after I rebuilt it. I was told to run it at 2000 rpm's for 20 minutes. After that I kind of eased into but it definitely wasn't babied.

I've put about 6000 miles on it since the rebuild. Checked it this morning and it is down a half a quart from my last fill up (about 400 miles).

I don't notice any smoke from the tailpipe, even when I get on it. I haven't done a compression test but I'll try it.

If I find anything that works I'll post it back on here so you guys will have an answer.

thanks again.

per a corolla rebuild thread:

6: Break in: Check coolant and oil level again, then drive it like you stole it!
Drive it at varying engine speeds and throttle positions as much as possible to help seat the new rings. WOT is the best thing for the new rings to seat. Some people say baby the crap out of it durring break it. I don't agree but I thought I'd mention that so that you can do your own research and decide what method you prefer.
After 500 miles change the oil and filter again with conventional oil. I usually go another 2,000 miles and then do another change and change to synthetic at this point. Don’t for get to check coolant and oil level some more.

ironically, that thread is for a fix to oil consumption problems in the 8th gen corolla
