Yep. This is due to the immobilizer chip in the ECU. The small chip in your key has to be recoded to the immobilizer.

However, if you don't mind a CEL, then you can just do away with the immobilizer. Wiggle it back and forth until it pops out.

Thanks... are there other advantages to OBD2 to OBD1? ...assume there is a thread on how to do...will search.

Where is the immobilizer chip that I pop out?

Stopped by local honda dealer to ask about rekey... he looked at me like I was out of my mind... in an old annoyed man voice "Ive been working here for 20 years and never heard of anyone doing a MT conversion... he obviously doesn't get out much...

immobilizer system consists of a ring around the key hole to receive the RFID signal from your key. It passes that signal to the ECU which does the checking. If it doesn't recognize the key it won't start. You can't just take out the ring and expect it to work.

I believe an auto to manual swap is okay to leave as is. You will just have a CEL for the missing AT sensor signals to the ECU.

Thanks doc_b, so, I swapped the ECU from MT car as well, and the old key definitely won't work with new ECU, since they have to have same code. Some other threads have recommended pulling immobilizer chip out of ECU.

Here is my real question, do I need to use MT ECU, or can I use the AT ECU with MT, so i don't have the rekeying problem?

Or does anyone know if I can swap immobilizer chip from old ECU to MT one, if I need the MT ECU...
THANKS!
