My H22a ate a rod bearing, whats the best motor to replace it with?
Hey guys well as the title says my h22a through a rod bearing about a week ago. Pissed me off cause the motor only has 100k miles on it, and i always did my oil changes every 3k miles. I guess i just got a bad one, the car always ran awesome tho and pulled like a freight train right up until the bearing went. I had it swapped in my 2000 ek hatch.
So anyways my question to you guys is where should i go from here? Im on a budget to get this thing back on the road, but i dont have to rush it since i have my winter eg coupe to drive.
Basically my choices are swap in another h22a and call it a day, a h23a possibly, or a motor that i have been reading up on a little bit are the F20b's. Hp for all three are rated at 200. however the torque is different h22a's have 165, h23a's have 172, and f20b's have 145.
I know the h22a would be the easiest since i already have the ecu tuned for it and everything is there but after having this thing blow up on me it has left me not feeling great about that motor, and i kinda want to get something else. I know the f20b is very similar to the h22a although it has a bit smaller bore (85mm appose to 87mm), is it also destroked tho? and do you think it would be any more reliable?
Any info or input from you guys would be awesome, just looking for opinions and thoughts as to what i should do keeping in mind i want to use my mounts and h22a tranny and what ever else i can use off of this motor, thanks guys.

If you go to the H23A, you will have more torque, but lower rev limit, many people are using this motor with great results now.
The F20B is less torque and higher revs, which in a Civic could work very well, just depends on your desires for the car.
In the scenario you have, the H22A will be best for your tune, but the difference in buying an H23A may give wiggle room for a retune. The H23A is also an obd2 engine, so you will need to swap some parts from your H22a to make it work.

Another question of mine is if i were to go with the f20b, i heard they have basically the exact same head as the h22a but a bit more restricted but have a more aggressive camshaft. could i use my h22a head on it but use its camshaft and maybe make more power? it would be a free hp gain...

I would spend some time in the Prelude forum, there are lots of H23A and F20B threads in there. Just be careful that you are looking at JDM "blue-top" H23A threads, there is an H23V frank that Prelude guys like too, which can get confusing.
I can't speak to the specifics, I've never done either swap, but the Prelude or Accord forums will most likely have the info you're after.

h23vtec is a really good motor. Its one of my favorites for sure. It has good torque and runs smooth. The best power is found between 5500 and 7000. For the money its hard to beat the performance you get out of this engine.
So ince i have all of my h22a stuff, do i need anything else to makes this motor work in my car? will my enigine mount for the h22a work? and what is all needed to convert it to obd1?
So after doing some more research, im thinking that i want to go with the F20b. So far from forums iv read that the f20b will bolt right into my h22 mounts and up to my tranny. Ill need custom axles tho... also the head is interchangeable with h22a's, here is a video link of the setup im after its not the best but its nice to see one out there with the setup i want....
So my question is now how do i obd1 convert this engine? can i use all my other h22a stuff to do it?
any more info you guys have on this is appreciated guys thanks!

Yes you can use everything from the h22 motor to make it work.. if your car was already setup for an h22 then you will only need to swap the distributor, the top half of the intake manifold because of the iacv, and possibily the fuel injectors depending on if you have a resistor box or not.. i dont understand the custom axle part if you already had the h22 running in your car before..

Another question guys... I know there are two versions of f20b's, ones automatic and makes 185hp and ones the manual 200hp version. I know some of the differences between the motors are cams, manual comes with type s cams, automatic comes with regular h22a4 cams. manual has 62mm throttle body, auto has regular h22a 58mm. the head on the manual is ported and polished, auto is not.
But other then these differences, when buying one how can i tell them apart easily? like is there a way visually thats a dead give away that its an auto or manual? i just dont want to get stuck with a manual, otherwise its going to feel slow after having an h22a. thanks guys.

I dont believe there is any real visual differences unless there is a flexplate/flywheel attached.. Cams and throttle body are the ones that come to mind.. Possibly the wiring harness having the shift solenoid plugs but idk about that ive never seen an auto harness..
