Default H23A Transmission Question 96 Si/ 92S

All,

I found a 96 Si manual with an engine that starts, with good compression numbers. 240K on it. The girl told me she's replaced the clutch twice but it needs a new transmission. Problems that started with the new clutches. She also can't remember if she ran out or almost ran out of transmission fluid at 'some point.'

what I am trying to determine is what goes into fixing a transmission if I'm not going to buy a new one. A friend told her he could fix it for under $500 which leaves me skeptical that it's really the actual transmission since that's the cost of the part from what i'm seeing online.

If I'm going to have it towed and looked at, what else do I need them to go over. She said she's had the CV joint replaced as well as the exhaust but it needs to be 'rewelded' on. I have not physically been in the car yet. A friend has done the testing for me so far before I drive 300 miles.

The second part of this is that I am an original owner of a 92 S 5 speed that I had an accident in January making a left turn into a collision with a mini-van cab. My front stabilizer bar, radiator, reservoir, AC, passenger light, bumper and hood are all in need of replacement. What I had originally wanted the 96 for was for parts but... her interior is in better shape, alloy wheels, which I don't think I can put on my car. And there are things like the exhaust, which is still the original on mine. The car has 152k with the engine at 126k and the clutch with 37k....and yes there's a story behind that.

so i can pull pieces off my car ie transmission etc I believe the numbers work for the F22 and H23, look about rebuilding, or swap engines completely (That solution was offered to me - though it seems extreme.)

I'm just at a loss since i know there are a lot of ways to go about getting me a complete car. And I know I've been told it's time to let my car go but i just can't seem to do it yet. and just want to make the best decision for putting one back together.

sorry for the long ramble.

Sounds like your car got hit pretty good, so it will probably be a better choice to pick the other one up, and swap any needed parts, including the transmission from your car to the new one.

I decided to head down this weekend and see what can be done to get it running since I'm using someone else's house/garage to do the work. If it doesn't work, than we can tow with his trailer hitch and get it back to my house where I can go from there. If i could figure out how to post a picture I could show the damage to my car but I had a license/bonded repair guy who could do the straighten on premises. Like I said it was a strange accident and she never stopped running. Just all the coolant leaks out and there isn't a reserve anymore..

I've had her longer than my husband or son.. just a hard thing to let go of....

I'll let you know how it goes this weekend since there will be plenty of body work to do, which at least that's something I did a little of in high school.

I got her and she's registered, safety inspected and tagged!! I then drove 250 miles home yesterday!!!! Yeah... here's the one caveat (and I did post this on Preludezone)

The clutch makes a noise when in nuetral and if lifted will actually rotate the tires while in neutral, which doesn't seem normal to me. It's definitely very different from my 92 S.
But there was virtually NO transmission fluid in the case when I got it and she had just had a second clutch put in because of issues with the first clutch they installed. my guess is they forgot to refill the transmission fluid the first time they put the clutch in !!
Anyway... I just don't want to do any damage by driving if theres something that should be fixed that I'm unaware of.

It also looks like there may be a small leak in the transmission... and when I say small.. not enough to drip to the ground but to make a 'drip' on the case.

Hmm, so now that there is fluid in the tranny, it still makes noise and drags in neutral?

What fluid did you put in it?

I would be doing another fluid change, looking for any metals in the fluid that comes out. That would probably be a good time to put some new washers on the drain and fill plugs, and do new axle seals. Those should be the places that will leak, or maybe the o-rings on the speed sensor.
