My 92 wagon has started jumping from 900 to 1500 rpm rapidly while in park. If the car is in drive or under load it levels out and does not effect driving.This is really embarrassing when at drive up window etc. It is like the car is revving by itself. Does anyone know what causes this?

It could be a vaccuum leak also.
