2001 Accord Temp Gauge Wildly Fluctuating
I have a 2001 Honda Accord v6 with about 144K miles on it. The only main problem I have with it is that the AC doesn't work (long story). But otherwise the car drives very well.
So driving home yesterday in stop and go traffic (which often happens on the way home from work), I glanced at the temperature gauge, and it was practically in the red. The few years I've been driving this car, the temp has consistently stayed at, say, 55% of the total gauge. It never budges. But yesterday it was at about 95%.
But then the strange thing was that as I watched it, it fluctuated all over the place, never lower than the 55% it's normally at, but up and down and up and down, with seemingly no relation to how fast I was going or whether my foot was even on the gas. It took me another 30 minutes to get home, in stop and go, and the whole time I was staring at the gauge. It never actually hit the redline, but got pretty damn close.
The car drove normally, and there were no strange sounds or smoke or smells. Just the fluctuating temp gauge.
Which makes me think it wasn't the actual temp of the engine, but that there's something wrong with the gauge itself?
And the other strange thing is that the Check Engine light had been on for a couple weeks, but two days ago it went away and hasn't been seen since. Coincidence?
I really don't want to sink big money into this car if I can avoid it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

The type of behavior you're describing sounds like it could be one of two things.
A loose or faulty ground, or possibly air in the coolant system.
Whatever the case, take care of that mil.

2 weeks ago i had the temp gage crazy too and when i turn the key in "on" position the CEL light doesn't turn on like i was normaly, some day it also stop cranking when i try to start it, it was my ground that goes to the engine that was bad, replaced it for about 5$ and now everithing is normaly working.
