92 Honda Accord Rustoleum Paint Job cb9
Ok. I know some people hate this and there are A LOT of a**holes out there who work in the auto body field. I used to prep cars myself. My boss never let me paint because he never wanted me to be able to ask for a raise etc..
If you want to see how big of a diick, and how judgmental people can be when talking about something as stupid as a paint job, just search rustoleum paint job, corvette. Man that forum is like 90% ashole..
Anyway.. I'm not expecting that from you guys.. Hint-don't hate. Plus once you see what I'm working with you'll understand the decision to do the rusto thing.
I got this car cheap. It had things wrong with it the owner couldn't fix affordably, but I could. (AC, Window Regulator- radio) and on and on. But she took decent care of the important stuff. Brakes, suspension, timing belt was all fairly new. She was a really sweet girl and I felt bad paying what I did for the car, but I really didn't want it. It did need 2 tires, 2 new axles, and had oil on the plug boots etc.. So I offered her $100. She countered at $150 and we had a deal at $125. For a wagon. Pretty good. I always wanted one.
So what am I working with? There are some body panels that are fine. Dirty and old, but the color and clear are still there.. Well there are 2 body panels that are fine. The rest are either bleached down to the white primer, have no clear, or have a mix of clear and uncleared sections. Awesome. I was trying to figure out what to do so I went over my options.
1)Sand off the clear and leave just the base and have someone re-clear it.. Damn near impossible to sand down the clear and not hit/burn out the color and over $200. Probably well over $200.
2) Sand down rough areas, Prime rough areas over, sand the partial panels down and paint those with a color matched paint. Then clear the whole car $500+ (I don't have a garage, gun, or big enough compressor)
C)Get a color matched latex, paint the whole damn thing with a roller and let people laugh.. $40
4) Or, thankfully people have experimented, and found the rusto enamel as effective auto paint. I knew it dammit. We painted a few cars with enamel for whatever reason back in the days (1997 or so). I think only reds and whites because there was no need for clear on some whites and reds.. Plus the rusto enamel will stick to bare metal, rust, sanded primer, sanded base coat, and sanded clear. Those are all my ingredients right there in one car.
Ufcking A that's just what I need. I'm in Hawaii so things are a little expensive, and as my wife says everything I undertake always costs a little more so I'm not going to pretend I can do this for $50. We'll see what the final cost is.
I do already have a TON of sand paper, and I can wet-sand all day. I repair a lot of surfboards for myself and friends so I've still got the feel for the paper in my hand. And I LOVE wet-sanding.
So those are my reasons for the rusto paint job. I think it's a perfect candidate. Don't like it? Call your Mom and whine to her. I don't wanna hear it. I'm not the least bit interested in negative opinions. I'm only writing this so people in the future can search Accord Rustoleum paint job and not be greeted with a bunch of bullisht uptight asholes like on the corvette forum.
I'll add pics just to prove that this car, though I love her and hope she doesn't read this, does not deserve a $4000 paint job.
I hope to start on this in a day or two. I was just bored this morning, had a lot of coffee, and felt like banging on my keyboard for a while.
P.S. In respect of the original owner I will be rolling and brushing this onto prevent any sort of environmental trouble I would get from spraying this outside of the proper booth.

Agreed on it being a perfect candidate for a Rustoleum job. What color are you going with?
After seeing the stickers on the rear of the car, your last comment makes perfect sense.
Oh man, sorry for the delay in posting this. Schools been killing me. I also work 30 hours a week plus. AND the surfs been OK. It also took A LOT of looking around to find Rustoleum in my intended color of Navy blue. HEre's a hint. NOONE'S got it on Oahu. So I went with Royal Blue and Black and mixed the colors last night to try and get close to my Cobalt Blue Pearl (B54p-3). Pearl? Yeah. I mixed in some Aluminum Rusto and it looks A LOT like a dark blue pearl. It does not look exactly like Cobalt Blue Pearl, and it is not perfect, but it is a car color. it doesn't look like paint for children's swingsets. I'm just trying to take away ammunition for the haters. "That Paint doesnt match!, oh my god it's not going to be perfect!, you have to spend $4000 on paint" Serious F**Ktards online.. Anyway. So I mixed it up last night just to try and get the ratio and I came up with 25% Black to Royal blue with about 1/64- 1/52nd of Aluminum. The Aluminum is awesome but it lightens the color A LOT. It's super thin too. A lot thinner than the standard colors. I wish I could use more of it and use less acetone/mineral spirits but I would have to light of a color.
I didn't want to just dump the paint out so I "painted" the end of a cheap workhorse drill I have. Painted is in quotation marks because it means I dipped a chopstick in the paint and then smeared it on the drill super thick. I did it at about 5pm in the rain with HIGH humidity. High for Hawaii anyway. And it was barely sticky at 9pm. Just straight paint, no thinners hardeners etc.. Not bad. How's it look? Keep in mind I "painted" it and laid it down sideways on a screwdriver where my wife picked it up an hour later and then laid it down on the ground. Resting on the ground.

If I can get these results using a chopstick and ONE coat I'm pretty sure a car with no bodywork and good prep will look ok.
The goods.

Wait, what's that garden sprayer doing in the picture? I would love to be able to roll this on and take my time etc.. but I dont have a garage and believe it or not in the winter it rains every day here. Usually for only 20 minutes in the morning and a little at night, but sometimes in the afternoon too. I can't roll it and leave it in the elements, AND I live on a bus street with a bunch of old annoying people. If they see me with a mask on painting on the street they'll call the cops. So I'm going to paint it with a garden sprayer at a friends house.
The haters reading that last part are like dogs watching steaks fall off a grill.
"You can't spray paint with a garden sprayer!" Hahaha.. YES THE UFCK I CAN. I LOVE when people who haven't tried anything tell me I can't do something. How the ufck do you know? Again, I'm just trying to take their ammo away. I know they're waiting to pounce like in EVERY other Rusto paint thread.
It MIGHT not work. I think it will. I can strain the paint, thin the crap out of it, I know the nozzle size and the pressure, and I sprayed frigging olive oil out of it already. I could use some well wishing, but overall I think it'll work.
Out of respect for the old owner and her love (and mine) for the Aina (land) since I will be introducing VOC's to the air by spraying I am now looking into making this vehicle a possible hybrid.. MORE AMMO! Except my friends are engineers, Electrical, Mechanic, and Marine engineers. They know nothing but motors and how to play with them and can get me batteries and electrical motors FREE. So again, UFCK off haters.
Let's keep this thread about the paint though. The hybrid things far off for now.
P.S. (I've had a lot of coffee again this morning) I am thinking about instead of painting the roof a dark *** blue and letting it get hot I can lay some sort of weatherproof, UV proof padding. A thinnish foam, or even a real thick coat of white undercpoating or home roof spray etc.. This being so it will stay a little cooler and so I can have some padding for throwing surfboards on top.
I'm just knocking this idea around, and I am well aware of the possible scenarios where certain materials, processes will not work. I'm not a complete idiot. I don't need comments like "Foam will break down in the sun, it'll never work" Let's think of some things that may last a year or two on the roof of a car that are
1)Light in color or reflective (foil backed insulations?)
b) Can withstand serious UV
3) Will not break down immediately or soak in water.
Any ideas?
