Default Spoon or Mugen

Im looking to upgraded my brakes and was wondering which one to go with. I wanted to see what my fellow R owners would say. I am interested in either the Spoon or Mugen setup.

Pics of the R?

Not an R owner here, but the spoon setup is the more popular of the two. 4 piston caliper that utilizes the stock sized itr pad.

Any peticular reason for the upgrade? Bling?

Have you tried good pads and sticky tires yet? There are plenty of honda challenge guys running stock itr calipers with race pads. Would be much cheaper if your looking into the upgrade for the performance aspect.

if you are looking for a performance upgrade, there are less expensive and better performing options from wilwood and brembo

if you are looking for the bling upgrade, spoon is more noticeable, and still gives and nice performance upgrade that still uses oe itr pads and rotors, mugen active gate system uses special rotors that are pretty expensive

If your really set on major brake upgrade look in fs section in Florida here on h-t my good buddy is selling project mu brakes. Those things are MASSIVE tho they are 4x100 but they have other rotor options, and 4x100 is one of a kind from my understanding

I would love a set of Spoon calipers for the ease of using the OEM sized pads.

Thanks everyone I guess going with the Spoon option is the way to go.
Being able to still use OE pads is a plus and if I wanted more performance I can add better pads.

As for only 4 posts I've been out of the import car scene for awhile but just recently picked up an R and will be posting pictures soon.

The Mugen Activegate setup is just an S2000 setup. Don't waste your money on it. Please keep in mind both units will limit your wheels options. The S2K/Mugen setup for example, pretty much requires 16'' wheels. The Spoon / 15'' wheel clearance will vary. Both are overpriced, especially with the current exchange rates.

Both are usually a bling upgrade. The S2k/Mugen setup does incorporate 12'' rotors which will aide in stopping. The Spoon's won't help increase the stopping power but will help modulation of the pedal. You won't see the real benefit though unless you are on track. Swapping brake pads on the Spoons are also a breeze, but again, track item.

The Legend GS or the NSX are still my vote. Having owned both the Spoon twinblocks and now the NSX's, the Spoons simply aren't worth the money (current asking price). The NSX's are a much better bargin at ~$275, though as demand rises so will the pricing.

function > form

other than the fact that the brake pads are a breeze to swap , i say dont waste your money on the SPOONS.

go with the NSX set up. you could upgrade all four brakes for the price of the spoon fronts

I would go with mugen just to go with the flow, but me personally I would leave it the way it is. And please don't sell the armrest and badge.

The more I think about it and looking at the car I have to go with the Mugen set up.
I think most people will agree once I post pictures of the car.

Arm rest and badge will not be sold

Stock with good pads. Haven't driven NSX's on track but I'll take coolhandlukes word for it. On the street under normal breaking his car felt the same with the NSX's and the Spoons. Either way you're still tire limited so don't waste money on other peoples opinions of your cars looks.

i am currently running nsx calipers with the 28mm legend rotors with some performance frictions pads they feel excellent. with the nsx setup you can still use itr size pads and still have clearance of the stock 15in rims. best bang for the buck setup

spoon = bling but semi functional bling haha. still can use stock size 23mm rotors and stock size itr pads. and clears most 15in rims

mugen active gate. uses s2k calipers, s2k size rotors and pads. the mugen rotor is fairly light for it size and design behind it is pretty sweet. like said before you need to run 16s or bigger.
