2000 Civic SI Regular Unleaded Gas / Black Smoke
Hey All,
I know i'll be slammed for posting such a thread but i bought a really nice 2000 SI with 170000 miles with rear bumper needed to be replaced. Can't beat the price what i paid for and the car runs Smooth.
Since i know the owner and this is what the car has :-
1) FulL Catback Exhaust
2) DC Sports Headers
3) o2 sensor replaced cause of the check engine light
4) Regular Unleaded gas since 120000 miles till now..
5) AEM Cold Air Intake
I've driven an SI before and i've seen the performance decrease because of the Unleaded gas the guy used for 60000 miles. So here are my questions and i need to answer :-
1) Should i just empty the fuel by driving the car and then put a fuel cleaner bottle and then start using Premium gas ?
2) Why on high RPM the car throws black smoke. Most likely at 7000 RPM. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it ?.

Honda's run rich naturally, especially in the higher RPM's. Not good that it was revved out like that with regular fuel though. Throw in some Shell V-power for the next couple of tanks. No need for a cleaner as that fuel has a lot of detergent. You should see a difference right away.
The car calls for 91. If you feed it 87/89, the knock sensor will retard the timing to prevent detonation, and will rob you of power. Just start filling up with 91/93 from now on, and don't worry about it. Don't bother with fuel additives.
