Drag Pistons to use?
Long story short, melted a couple pistons this week, racing locally. Ran a 10.83 @ 127mph with the car breaking down in 4th. Car is a turboed 81.5mm GSR with Precision 6266. Made 600whp and 376 tq on C16 Race fuel. Moderate timing. ID1000 new injectors. Walbro 400lph fuel pump, stock lines. Freshly sleeved block with 40 dyno passes, 40 track runs, and maybe 1000 street miles.
I was running 10.5:1 Mahle forged pistons with Eagle H-beam rods. Was supercharged before, and decided to keep the pistons and rods for this setup.
What would you suggest for a good piston and rod combo to make 600-700whp? I believe my Eagle rods should be fine, but may upgrade if they won't hold up.
If you need anymore info, in order to state your opinion, please ask and I will try to answer.
Any help, is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tyler

I am running a set of 85mm custom TPR spec JE pistons and Manley Turbo Tuff rods making 738whp/530wtq on a 6266 at 28psi. Revving the engine to 8700.
I like this piston because its a full skirt piston and the valve reliefs are deeper than a stock shelf piston. They are also nice because they come with the thicker upgraded wristpins. For the money, they are a no brainer.

How about Endyne Rollerwave's? Anyone with experience with them? Have some, not a chance t run the block yet. Have great experience with Wiseco though.
Been advised on some Arias flattops, 10:1 comp ratio. Eagle rods should still be good for my goals, but I could upgrade.

you might want to look into why the **** melted?! some mechanical failures are untraceable but things like pistons melting or crumbling are caused by something you can track or figure out.
so what is "moderate" timing these days haha..

According to the data log, it saw between 17 and 19 degrees of timing on that pass. It made 595 whp and 376 tq on a Dynojet the day before at 22psi on C16. Maybe this is not moderate, but some others locally are running more timing at the same hp level. They do have lower compression than I had. After talking to a few reputable engine builders, it looks like either detonation or running lean. I don't think it was a one time thing, looking at the pistons closer, there is progressive wear on all. Not as bad on 2 and 4 as 1 and 3. I would say it was detonating for a bit without me realizing..
Post pics of the pistons. Could have had a headgasket lifting, especially since it appeared to be slightly wearing on all pistons.
Arias Pistons and Elmer gets my vote. They offer upgraded pins fortheir pistons as well. Custom spec pistons are available at a reasonable price. We've made good power on their shelf pistons and take a beating. Any question on ring specs any anything else Arias is a phone call away, to answer questions.

Just checked the log again. 18 degrees of timing is the max it saw throughout the log. 4th gear had 68% duty cycle (this is where it stopped pulling and blew), 3rd gear had 84%, 2nd had 85% and 1st had 77%.
As far as air fuel ratios, 1st crept to 13 near rev limiter, 2nd went from 11.93 to 12.51 with it fluctuating in low 12's the whole time, 3rd went from 11.57 to 12.24 with it mostly 11.8 or so through the gear, and 4th went from 10.83 to 11.96 with mostly in the 11-11.5 range.
From what I can tell, 1st is a bit lean, and 2nd, but 3rd and 4th seem decent. I like to see it around 11.0-11.5 the whole time...
Thoughts?
Edit. I will post pics of the pistons asap. Photobucket is down right now..

your timing is "conservative" sometimes not enough timing screws with things but doesn't usually cause a melt down. Fix your fuel delivery, what about piston clearance? if they got real bad swollen and then started destroying themselves, all sorts of havoc can begin to happen.
Stock lines from tank to the engine bay. -6 line in the bay. I guess I will look into the lines before the engine goes back in.
-6 or -8 for feed and return?

I have been advised from SF to make sure the piston to wall clearances are larger than normal spec. Also looking at a set of Arias flat tops with about 10:1 compression ratio. Plan is to upgrade the lines to -8 it looks like, a new sleeve, new pistons, and see how it goes. For safety, I'm also going to change oil pump, water pump, thermostat, timing belt, and timing belt tensioner. Just for piece of mind, not that any of it has to do with my issues.
Any more suggestions of upgrades/changes, please throw them out there!

IF you DO go with the Rollerwaves, throw larrys specs in the garbage (if they havent changed yet). His dream specs fucked my WISECO ... oh oh,,,,, I Mean "Endyn" pistons up.
HE speced .0032 P2W for the 87mm bore. I didnt like it called him and told him I was trying to make 700+... HE assured me id be "fine". Citing his "super special high silica content pistons" (In my book they're off the shelf Wiseco blanks with modded reliefs and quench).
It fucked me. Pistons grabbed the walls. He blamed machining and tuning and everything under the sun excet for his spec being ******* retarded. Tuning was spot on, AFS PERFECT NO detonation, no lean condition. Tops of pistons look PERFECT, just black death.

My machinist fought me when I didnt want to listen to his reccomendation of .0045 and insisted Larry was on rocks.... Should have listened knowing better but didnt.
I knew better and trusted his input. It wont ever happen again. Ive been on CPs since at .0045-.005 P2W and beat the **** out of it at 750+ with no issues. just a tad clackity when cold, you cant hear any slap after about a minute of it running.
