Default Thinking about running only one fan

Hey I'm doing a swap as some of you May know and I wanted to know the purpose of my two radiator fans. The smaller drivers side fan is less than a millimeter say from my header which is probably too close. Is it safe to just take it off? Btw, I have no a/c system.
