Default Amp 1 > Me 0 Help?

I bought a little Alpine KTP-445U( http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ktp-445u/ ) to power my mids while keeping my stock S2k deck. The factory deck doesn't have RCA's, so I identified the wires I needed to cut and did so. So the audio wire went from the deck, to the amp, and then to the speaker(s). I hooked the supplied yellow power wire directly to the positive wire on the battery. Grounded the black to the chasis. Turn the car to the on positioin and the sound was LOUD coming through the speakers. I couldn't turn the volume up much past level 2 or 3 because the speakers would start popping. Loud distortion noise, the "beep" that the deck makes when you turn the volume all the way down was even loud.
Clearly something is wrong but I have NO idea where to start. I have never installed an amplifier but I figured if I can do my own engine harness, then I could tackle this little guy. Obviously this is not the case. Help?

Did you turn the switch to "Speaker-level" input instead of RCA.....located on the bottom of the amp? Also, you didn't mention anything about the "remote turn-on" wire. You need to connect that to the radio (power antenna ~ YELLOW/GREEN wire).
