So my car is having a random hesitation at light throttle, low rpms then it'll disappear and act as if nothing is going on.

Full throttle doesn't break up all the way through vtec to just about 8300 RPMs. It only throws a check light randomly, but i've always attributed that to having a small hole in the exhaust header from the car being low enough to hit speed bumps here n there.

Are there certain things I need to check before I decide to take it to a shop to check out?

Stats on the car is it's a 95 w/a b16a swap. Manual...has small mods: IHE and CTR cams.

Any help would be appreciated..

I know this is kind of broad but I figured i'd throw it out there and see what somebody might give a suggestion on.
