Default The power of a dx

I just joined to ask you boys a few Honda questions. I'm looking at A Black Honda Civic DX Coupe for a daily driver. I'm not really into customizing all that much but i have friends who are mad about tuning and they reffered me here.

Its a 1993 Civ Coupe DX

Im a guy who doesn' go driving just to get from point A to point B...i like to have fun in between. ( im sure like many people here)

Anyway will a DX have the power or "kick" to have some fun in? I researched about it a bit. It has 102 hp... Is the stock DX freeway friendly ( have sufficient passing power)? Right now I have a 1988 Tempo L Please tell me the DX will be more fun to drive than that POS.

thanks for all your help

It will probably be a bit more fun, but not by much.

it's got plenty of power unless you're used to a z28.

passing power, and great gas mileage

It should be quite a bit more fun than that Tempo shouldn't it?

IMO, biggest problem with the DX (aside from the lack of power), is the tranny. That thing is geared to do like 400mph in 3rd.. I hate my friend's 99 DX tranny.

IMO, find a cheap EX tranny and swap that thing in there asap. Cheap and effective Single best mod outside of a VTEC head or motor swap

It is a fantastic car for the money. Reliable too if you don't try to make it something it's not.

I used to have fun in an 87 CRX DX with an automatic.

76 hp at 6000RPM.

That DX will be fine.

Until you catch the bug.

D3 means it nevers "shifts" up into the fourth speed.

It's like driving a manual and never using fourth or fifth.

How do you think I made that 87 auto CRX fun?

honda head the civic will be WAY! funner than your tempo.
My friends dodge truck is probably faster than my CX but my civic is funner, more comfortable to drive.

Try and get a CX, or VX model take 1500 dollars get a DOHC swap and 1000 into suspension and 500 into wheels tires and your car will be SUPER FUN to drive

Keeping it in D3 will keep the rpm's higher at cruising speed than it would if you had it in OD. If it were me, i wouldn't do it, but i have an A/T, so what do i know right?

I have the same car with 137900 miles on it. The car runs and revs strong. I wish I had a MT one though.

Stick around here long enough & you will be

That should be much more interesting to drive than a Ford Tempo. Whoever up top suggested the EX tranny that's a good idea. Also Civics respond well to suspension mods, so a good strut/spring combo might up the ante on the "fun to drive" factor. A good handling car can more than make up for any shortcomings it may have in the power department IMHO (although perhaps that's just an excuse us slow guys use ) Anyway, have fun with it

Buy it and keep the DX motor for a while. The D15B7 1.5L 16v motor is very peppy for a daily driver.

I have a 93 Dx hatch 5-speed and can actually outrun a lot of cars that should be faster A few simple bolt-ons will make that into a different motor.

Everyone is quick to swap. Save your $$, drive the car as-is and fix it up slowly and when you know more about what you are doing.

Honestly, to have more fun for a daily drive, it is not about speed, but handling. That Dx, for a reasonable price, can be made into an outstanding handling car.

If I were you, you just like to have fun. Upgrade suspension, don't race or anything. You will have more fun with a suspension then putting a lot of money into the engine.

However, I WILL NOT be surprised if you "catch the bug". Honda's are my thing because they are sooo easy to tune, interchange parts, hybrid, and of course, the sleeper look. I don't ever try to "race" people on the streets, even with a stock motor at a track would be a blast!

Good luck.
