steering wheel clunk
Today my car made a clunk from the floorboard
It just started happening all of a sudden.
It happens when I jiggle my steering wheel left to right in a parked position
I found the location where the noise is coming from but I don't know what it's called. I will upload a picture soon.
It comes from where the steering wheel column seems to connect to the rack and pinion.
Would this mean I need a new steering column and rack and pinion?
My neighbor came over and told me it might just need an adjustement but I didn't find anything that adjusts there.
Any ideas on the cost to replace a rack and pinion?
Thanks in advance
Noise is coming from here: where the shaft sticks out.
There's a bolt there, is it adjustable?

I had the wheels off earlier and shook everything violently
The noise is only when the wheels are on the ground and I move the steering wheel
Seems like there is play in the rack
Any idea if theres something that can be adjusted there?
edit: I did not check for vertical play in the rack or inner tie rods
How do you check inner tie rods?

I wonder if you mean something like this

apparently it makes a world of a difference. worth trying! not sure about the clunk, but that's the adjustment. there is a thorough guide somewhere, this is just the discussion.

there.
I wasn't sure if it was relevant to EFs, but looking at a picture of an exploded EF rack, the adjuster definitely needs that tool.

I can fin clea instructions on how to perform it.
Hold locknut and loosen 14 mm
loosen locknut and hold 14 mm
each thread has it a dofferent way

I just did this to my car. It takes 20 minutes at most.
You don't need a special wrench for EFs.

I put my car on ramps.

These are the only tools I used.

This is the driver side, where the column meets the rack, approximately.

I used the massive crescent wrench. Cracked it, and made sure the 14mm is loose from it.
Tighten the 14mm. It doesn't need to be cranked on there, just enough to feel the bolt stop.
Holding the 14mm in place, tighten the 40mm locknut.
It makes a huge difference.
I had a clunk coming from the drivers side and it seems to have gone away after doing this. Steering is much tighter taking fast corners.

THATS A MASSIVE WRENCH. I was going to ask what you used for the 40 mm lock nut until I saw the tiny 14 mm
I looked under there today and I have some channel pliers that should do the trick
Here is this for any future references
will update as soon as I try this

Hey guys, I found out the axle was bad and swapped it out, no more noise. I just got done a few minutes ago.
However the steering wheel is slightly crooked.
I did have to remove the radius rod and sway bar as well as lower shock bolt.
Do you guys know if this is normal? Do I need to get it aligned Now.
I'm just a little worried because I want to take it to the alignment shop where I have lifetime alignments. But it's 30 miles away and don't want to break anything
Of course there's a closer one to me but I will have to pay again.
edit: I replaced the tie rod yesterday as well thinking that was the problem, this is my first time driving it since then.

Thanks everyone i did this to my 97civic hx about 1000k miles ago. Still holding strong. Iwas ready to change some parts out before i found this thread.👍👍. My car was super easy to do everything is out in the open. I tighten the bolt around 1/16 of a turn, very little. And it worked.
