No you can keep the trans on and remove the engine as long as have the right tools and knowledge. its actually really simple and can be done in well under 2 hours.

But if you have to ask do you think you are ready to pull a motor? Just a question, no flames intended.

You should be able to pull the whole thing without pulling the tranny first. You may have to adjust the chain when lifting the motor out, so the tranny sits lower than the crankpulley side of the motor. It might be easier that way.

are you sure you have ALL the bolts out? there's a long one that goes through either the starter or the alternator (i can't remember) that holds the transmission to the engine pretty snugly.

that aside, why the hell would you pull the tranny if you didn't have to? it's pretty ****** simple to pull the whole assembly out of your engine bay. just get two friends to help you balance/tilt it while extracting and it'll be out in no time.

removing the transmission is not only a waste of time, but it's downright stupid.

did you seperare the transmission from the engine?
if you DID you can leave the axles in, but i wouldnt reccomend it. just because its really easy to destroy a boot.
and what engine are you putting in? i hope its another d16z6

Yes the tranny is seperated from the engine... I cant just get the clutch past the bottom of the bell housing enough to pull out the motor....

If you know what in the hell you are doing it can be done in 45 minutes. That is all the time it takes to remove a GSR from my EG.

you should really get another person to help jostle the bellhousing around. taking the transmission off of the engine while everything is still in the engine bay is really, really difficult (and dangerous). with one person on the engine and one on the transmission, after both axles are out of both the rotors and the transmission, you should be able to tilt and wiggle the two loose.

i assume, at this point, that you have all the motor mounts loose so you can move the engine...if not...there's your main problem

Yea i have the engine completely unbolted from everything i just cant get it apart enough from the tranny to pull it out... all engine mounts are off... only thing holding the engine now is the fact that it is caught on the tranny...

Thanks for the reply btw... i think everyone else died or something

If only I had a plasma cutter or something i could just cut the block in half .... it would be so much easier... (the block is all that is left in the engine btw) i took the head off a long time ago b/c it was all that could be salvaged... and for those that dont know the block has a hole in the front and back of the block from when i hydrolocked and threw 2 rods.... which is why im swapping it out.... but I think Im going to have a nervous break down or a coronary first......

lol im viewing it but only gonna replie and hope that you get it out ok... its not hard at all to get that engine outta the car, if you had some help it would be easier.. remember tilt the engine on the lift that the tranny is facing the ground more and make sure all the mounts are off the car and motor also remove the axles and it will be a little easier so they dont get in the way..
