Trying to help my son. He bought a 1998 Prelude, Base, that did not run. We put a new engine in and now the car shifts very hard into reverse and when it shifts into second it is like we are downshifting. In other words, it will not shift into second. Please be advised, we are NOVICES. First time doing anything major on an automobile, but I can follow directions. Did we attach something wrong when we reattached the transmission? Did we forget something? Is the transmission shot? My son is 19 and really proud if this car. I believe he got scammed into buying the car. Anyway, any ideas on the transmission would be greatly appreciated. Believe it or not, the engine runs beautifully.

I should have said earlier, it is automatic transmission.
