Default Snow Tire time BABY

well unlike you Cali boys us here in NJ get snow. Since this is my daily driver I gotta get some snow tires. What do you prefer or recommed. I'm killing my Azenis in the next few months and are using the stock rims to mount them on.

I used to have some Hakkapelittas, they were AWESOME, wore out and am now running Gislaved's which are pretty sweet too, BUT I would probably reccommend Pirelli W210 Snow Sports, good traction that can handle high speed driving as well

Would it be OK/Safe to just get good snow tires for the front, or is it a must to go all the way around? I was just thinking how our cars are front wheel drive and how we might be able to get away with it.

When i totaled my 97 CW in 99, i had a set of Pirelli HR rated snows with Accord steel rims which i ordered from TireRack package which i used for one winter. I replaced it with 00 FBP R and I bought also a daily driver 94 Tercel w/ 3k miles from old
lady. I never use these snows package so it sat for 3 yrs now in my garage. From my experiences with them, these are the
only High performances snow avail for europe because i had Bridgestone blizzak on previous hondas and it had suck dry feelings. Well, let me tell u, even with this HR rated Pirellis, it still sucks because its these new ice technology with soft rubbers.
The other things i hated from this Tire rack package is the Accord steel rims. The offset is like 55mm so as i remember,
my steering wheel were little bit off striaght line and don't track so straight.
The good part with this snow packages were i was very stable and confidence in snow storm on RT. 80 and were passing
CRVs!

Anyone use these for winter? I need to get a set too for due to sweet ohio winters. Luckily i think they make 195/55/15. A quick review would be nice.

I like these. Even in dry, they arent that bad for handling. Snow and rain, they grip well. Very pleased.

I got my car with used Pirelli W210a's and they did the job.
I'm from Montreal , where the winters vary quite a bit and lately we haven't seen lotsa snow, so I opted to go with these tires again...but new.

The reason is simple, they have a sidewall equal to most performance summer tires. If you try to sit on them , they don't flex, sorta like my RA-1's but not like Hoosiers.
This stability is really what I'm looking for as I don't want to upset the balance of the car.Besides most days are on dry surface and these babies feel like summers.

BTW, I used them in April on the track for lapping( they were toast anyways) and they were suprisingly competent.

Nokian Hakkas Work really well on ice since the snow has been a little less lately.

Those tires are very good. I use them for two canadian winters with now problem at all. They are better on icy condition compare to snowy condition. The best snow / winter tires are the Nokia Hakkapaleti (pardon the spelling).

im gonna rock some blizzaks on the beater this winter

I"ve been pretty happy with my Blizzaks.
4 winters later, countless blizzards/snowstorms with blizzaks and i've never once gotten stuck, or into a dangerous situation the tires couldn't get me out of

nokian hakkappeliitta's all the way. i didnt know what snow traction was until i got these things last year. i got the hakka Q's. The snow traction, control, and grip was incredible. i easily drove through 6 to 8 inches of snow at least once a week (thats upstate NY for ya) without a problem. but the ice traction was even better. totally glazed over roads were no problem. i mean i wasnt flying down them, i was driving carefully, but iu never worried once. gone were the day of white knuckle winter driving. i even convinced my friend with a wrx to get some for this year....that will be a lot of fun (turbo + AWD + snow= ). anyways, i would highly recommend these tires. the blizzaks are great tires as well, but i got the hakkas because of slighter higher treadwear (i drive a lot) and the spiral sipe system that they have for the awesome ice traction.

truth is, there are a lot of snow tires out there, some cheap, some not so cheap (mine were 100 a piece mounted, balanced in 175/65/14). most people wont notice the difference or have the need for such tires, but if you want the best, and need the winter performance, these do very nicely.

oh yeah, and make sure of two things:
A) get four tires, always get four tires. if you must get two tires, always put them on the rear wheels. the biggest threat to you in the winter is spinning out. if your rear wheels have traction, there is a much smaller chance of this. whether you have rear or front drive, put them on the rear. this is documented a lot at various sites (especially snow tire manufacturers such as nokian)
B) try to get tires to mount on your stock sized rims if possible and get them 10mm skinnier than stock and five percent higher sidewall. the thinner tire helps to dig down through the snow for more traction. (my stock size is 185/60/14, so my snow tires are 175/65/14).

good luck to all and have fun in the snow. you will definitely learn to drift your car around a lot of corners and in parking lots....he he he!

I know this is well documented, and it is probably only me but for some reason I much ratter have the driving wheels with the best traction tires...no need to have good grip at the rear if you can move (on FWD car that is)

Don't get me wrong, you still need decent tires in the rear or else it's polka time...

Do not do this. Just like racing when you have sticky tires up front and slippery tires in the rear, the car will want to rotate.

You can probably get away with it if you had descent all seasons on the rear. But if you have RE010, AZENIS or any other summer only tires, it would not be wise to run them during the winter even if only for the rear tires.

the size that I am replacing are 195/55 15 these are the proper profile.
Unfortunately this tire is being discontinued, I think, so I went with 205/50 15 which is the size I use for auto-x and track.

The guys have valid points concerning traction, the Hakka 1 is the outright best in snow, the Blizzaks are the winners on the ice but like I said, winters are getting mild and I drive fast all the time, so I want a tire that resembles the handling characteristics of my summers....sooooooo.....that's why the W210A...where the `'A' is important.
My compromise is toward wet and dry sticking.

Aren't you a little optimistic to think that Montreal winter is going to be mild...last year was "mild" but you know how fast that can change.
BTW you would be suprise at the handling caracteristic of the Michelin Artic Alpin.

Last year, everywhere in Canada was mild. We can only hope for the same this year but I seriously doubt it will happen.

Can't go wrong with the Blizzaks!!! They were f'n awesome! I was easily passing 4runners on the highway with confidence.

Only problem with blizzaks is wear. They are pretty soft.
