Default 94-97 Accord Steering Rack Noise or something else?

Hey guys, I have been looking for a similar situation, but my search-fu is lacking.

My mom's 95 Accord wagon EX is making a knocking noise after accelerating and then releasing the gas pedal. Almost sounds like a binding knocking noise...metal on metal. The noise seems to disappear once you press on the brakes.

My first thoughts was maybe the motor mounts, but when revving the car, the motor is fairly secure.

My second thoughts was the axle, but the boots on both sides look fine, and turning one way or the other isn't making a noticeable difference.

The brakes seem fine...I don't think there is an issue with the calipers sticking or etc.

My guess is that it is the steering rack that is gone. The driver side has the boot ripped off completely, and it doesn't look like there is much grease left. I have never changed a steering rack, but I presumed that it would make a noise when you turn the wheel?

Presuming the rack is bad, is the noise coming from play in the steering rack? In other words, the rack is no longer tight, so when the car is accelerated and released, that the hub is shifting forward and back slightly, making the knocking noise? Or maybe it is just the tie rod ends that need to be replaced...I was pulling on them and there is a little play. Since the rack isn't leaking fluid, I am hoping I can just change out the ends

And then when the brakes are pressed, it secures the hub, and keeps it from rocking back and forth?

Thanks for the long read. Presuming that the rack is bad, I guess I will try to find a DIY thread on replacement.

I've got close to the same issue... I've replaced everything on the front end, ball joints (upper & lower), both axles, inner and outer tie rods and I still have a clunk when I turn the wheel and spiral down my parking garage at work. I'm thinking mine is the steering rack as well. My car is a 99 with 195K.

Since this is my mom's car and I know she plans on replacing it near December, I don't think we will be replacing all the suspension parts lol.

If I can narrow it down to one or two culprits, that will be fine. But I know she isn't going to want to spend thousands into the car
