Default Exhaust out of the hood

While at englishtown this weekend the announcer made a comment about exhaust coming out of the hood and being in the path of the driver would not be allowed next year. I went to the NHRA rule book and searched other places to see if there is any truth to this statement but have not found any. So can anyone elaborate more on this?

No more funny cars anymore either? I'd say a blower exploding in your face is more of a issue than that. Plus most if not all of the hood exit exhausts come out on the pass side of the hood anyway so it's not in the drivers way to begin with.

I would assume that they are just waning to keep it to the passenger's side to avoid any fluids covering the windshield if the engine lets go.

I spoke to OGS about this a month ago. They contacted NHRA directly and NHRA states that there will be no rule change for next year.

You can contact them at OGSTech@gmail.com to verify this.

Well let's assume the fluids do cover the windshield, I guess this is where we can be glad we are typically going straight so if something does get on the windshield we don't have to worry about a up-coming turn.

If im not mistaken they said they were trying to make it so it would have to exit behind the front tires some where

Would make much more sense to have it exit up top on the car than on the ground in front of the rear wheels. Soooo many accidents have happened when the engine lets go and coats the track and rear tires.

I was just referring to it being on the passengers side of the car but still out of the hood. On the ground and in front of the wheels would be an absolute no ****ing go. Lol.

You would rather take trim rings to the windshield over fluid on the tires too right? Lol

That will be the next rule in the NHRA rulebook.

"If the chassis is equipped with exhaust/exterior trim rings in front of the windshield, a windshield MUST be installed in the factory location."

*NOTE* Chassis may NOT be altered to accept a windshield with more than 37.5* of angle.

According to the NHRA rulebook: "All cars must be equipped with exhaust collectors, headers, or stacks installed to direct exhaust out of car body to rear of car, away from driver and fuel tank". I suppose that would be up to the NHRA's interpretation. I'll be willing to bet that not one of you has contacted the NHRA with this question. I have. They said "no way" to exhaust exits thru the hood.

As stated by DP above, OGS contacted NHRA, They said no rule change is happening.

Seems there are more people that compete regularly that have hood exit exhaust than people with a dp going down. What are they going to do, tell every one that shows up to race "NO''? I don't see that happening. I'd like to know what they meant by ''being in the path of the driver'', other than oil/water.

what does nhra have to do with this? wouldnt it be up to the sanctioning body that puts on the import events (which is not nhra)?

Seems like they would have to allow it, since it's a safety measure anyway. Little hatchys with 1000+hp have proven to be pretty sketchy when they backfire at 160+mph with a down pipe..

NHRA has everything to do with it! They make the rules that that member tracks have to abide by. Whether the track follows those rules is another matter.

I believe that it was the Division One tech director. Was told that the exhaust on my Camaro could not exit through the hood. Here is the phone number from the NHRA web page: 215-343-2558

the way the exhaust must be run seems like a "class" specific rule, not a track safety/nhra rule.

E-town told my that the past few times I have been there. Each time I act like I didn't know. lol

It's no big deal. They have been saying it for years. They are afraid of a turbine wheel being ejected into the crowd. Just don't run a Precision and you'll be fine.
