Default D16y7 Vaccum leak??/idle problem

I have a stock d16y7 and I noticed today a whistling at the filter on my SRI.

I found out its sucking air in, so much i put a piece of card board on it and it was suctioned to my intake pipe with the filter off.

I dont know what this means, but when i block off the intake it idles at about 100-200 and with the filter at about 700. This is with no loads at operating temp, fans kicked in already.

Seal the leak.

What is the idle problem?

Should i get a new filter? Ive noticed the mesh is getting ruined because of the way it rests on the mount. Maybe this is causing a leak?

The idle problem is that sometimes it will idle low at 200 or 400 and this makes the car shake. And sometimes at around 7 where i set it. I dont want to raise it because then it would be too high when it is at 700. Idk why i have multiple idle speeds.

What's behind the cardboard and where is the leak?

Car is stock, ej6 with a y7

I just threw p0505 the other day, after adjusting idle up, but adjusted my idle back down and it went away.

I have cleaned it before, not in months though. I am thinking its a vacuum problem, either my filter or my pcv valve.

Behind the cardboard is a coupler type thing that I put my filter on.

I dont know if there is a leak. I just know that the cardboard was suctioned to the pipe. You have to pull it off with a small amount of force to remove it.

What filter?

It's a good idea to replace the PCV valve but it's not likely to throw P0505.

Start by cleaning the IACV and then try again to adjust the idle speed using the service manual procedure.

Its a spectre, and like i said it is worn on the bottom from rubbing on the pass mount.

I know the reason for the P0505 was bc i adjusted the idle up. It happened soon after.

Ill try cleaning it again. All you do is turn it a half turn at a time after car has reached op temp and fans on right?

Really what i was worried about was that my intake was sucking in air at idle, is this normal?

The engine pulls air through that opening, so I am puzzled as to why you would block it with cardboard. Explain.

And if you think the filter is clogged, then replace it. Am I missing something?

I put the cardboard there so i could walk to the inside to see what the idle is when it is blocked off. It is about 100-200.

I didnt think it was clogged more like it has a leak. It makes a whistling sound at idle, slight different than the whistle it makes using throttle.

I know the intake is meant to pull air, but should it be pulling air at idle?

I don't get it. It makes no sense. Why do you have cardboard blocking the air intake. If you remove the cardboard, does the idle return to normal. Of course the engine pulls air through the intake anytime the engine is turning.

Post pictures of the filter.

Where is this leak you're worried about? Mark it in the picture.

I just did it kind of as an experiment to see what the idle would be if i did. Of course i dont drive around like that.

And yes when the cardboard is removed it returns back to around 700.

And i will post a picture of the filter in a few minutes.

The idle speed is normal without the cardboard, right? So there's no idle problem.

And are you worried that some unfiltered air is leaking past the air filter?

Well sometimes it idles normal. Sometimes it idles too low.

For example, ill stop at a light and my car will shake really bad and be idling at like 300. Then at another stop it well be back at 700.

My car also takes an extremely long time to get to normal idle at startup. Id say almost 5 minutes to drop from 1500 to 700, idk if this is normal, none of my other cars seemed to have this problem. Maybe cause ive always had a B and they have a FITV??

My main concern is why the hell is my idle different from stop to stop? I just have no idea what could casue it to be at 300 then 5 mintues later 700.

^ Do what Ron said and change your PCV valve. It's $4 + the cost of an oil change. That filter needs replacement but that's not causing your idle issue.

Yes i was planning on replacing the pcv, can that cause a sporadic idle?
