ok i need my car back on the road but not bad enough that i want to risk ruining the trans i just put in my car i want to know if 5w-30 is ok to put in my trans for a few days untill i can get some either 10w-30 or make a drive to get some honda mtf. most likely getting some tomorrow if i can drive. just currious if it will be ok for a little bit like maybe 50 to 100 miles

thanks for any opinions. my guess is that it will be ok but i just want another few opinions real quick.

 

i'm several hours late, but yes it'll work. i was always told to use engine oil vs gear oil in honda transmissions. granted i try to use honda mtf whenever possible

ehh it was my last day anyways so a few hours late because i needed to wait for a ride is no biggy. plus its mcdonalds anyways..... welp anyway ya i plan on getting honda mtf i just was planning on running something cheeper through it since my trans hasnt been used in 3 to 5 years and sitting in my garage and i want to make sure anything that might have gotten in anything is out. well i guess ill go fill it up and maybe take it for its first drive in a month.

 

no matter what dont put motor oil in the trans period always use either honda mtf or gm syncromesh nothing else why because everything else specially motor oil will **** your **** up speaking from experience(1 tranny syncros went to **** after putting motor oil, then another trans same **** but grinds pop outs and not being able to put into 1st unless forced after motor oil) both trans were great before

 

You don't know what you are talking about. My service manual specifically recommends motor oil, 10w30 and 10w40 for hot climates. 5w30 will also work, but you should change it as soon as you can.

 

To me it looks like it says Transmission oil "i.e. Gear oil" not motor oil which are very different. I would never personally put engine oil, no matter the viscosity, into my own manual transmission.

 

Typical response from a guy that just reads random manuals trans fuild is way different from motor oil……motor oil is mean to have less friction…trans fluid, gear oil is meant to have more friction so the gears stay oiled and grab not slip

I've run nothing but wal-mart 5w30 in my HF tranny that I put in my hatch two years ago. I've never had a grind or problem in any way out of it. I've run 5w30 in every D and B tranny I've had and they've all been fine. The only time I've had synchros go bad is from friends thrashing my gearboxes.

Now, I will say, if you have weak synchros in the tranny in the first place, 5w30 is not going to help. If it's a good tranny you should have NO problems though.



EDIT: On a side note, if you run 5w30 in a tranny, you should change it way more often. I change mine every two or three oil changes to be safe. Again, I've never had issues running non-synthetic motor oil in my trannies.

 

I used 10w-30 in my si tranny.

 

I've had no problems running 10w-30 in a couple cable trannys the last couple of years. Just have to stay on top of it, which was mentioned above...

 

10w30 is 10w30. I have never seen a transmission fluid 10w30. If you look at the chart I posted, the only difference is the SG grade oil is not listed for the trans. If you want to spend more money for fancy syncromesh or honda mtf, more power to you. I am a believer in synthetics like mobil 1, but from what I've read our cars do better with more traditional oil like Castrol GTX. At least in the engine. If you're destroying transmissions, I would question their history and your driving style.

 

i have heard of people using both motor oil and vise virsa, transmission fluid. like said before. you have to question your cars history, and your driving.

in my own experience, i have rebuilt my own transmission. i used walmart 10w30 for break in process. then switched to honda mtf. felt no difference. I later switched back to regular 10w30 after a few thousand miles. trans is still going strong.

btw, i beat on the trans just to check to see if my transmission rebuilding skills were going to hold up. 9k miles and i have yet to see a problem.
