Default trans only shifts into 3rd and 4th

so my gsr was driving just fine and then all of a sudden the shifter went sloppy and only shifts into 3rd and 4th gear.

some of the problems i stumbled across on the web are:

-bad bushings

-bad u joint

-bad shifter mechanism in trans.

not sure if it could be anything else, but i would like some insight as to what i can do to pinpoint the problem.

thanks

Im no pro but I would go with shift mechanism. Did you do anything different when it gave out? Any maintenance (removing the b*tch pin) or hard driving/shifting?

I actually change my mind on what I think it is. I just went out to my garage and looked to see what I think would cause your issue.

Here are some pics:

At the top of this picture you can see the bolt that holds the joint onto the rod. If that bolt were to either break or somehow come out, you would be able to shift forward and back but left to right (ie 1-2 and 5-R) would just cause the rod to rotate but not the joint assy.

Heres a close up of that bolt:

Like I said, Im no pro/expert so this is just my guess. I could be completely wrong.
