Default Gauge Issues

Ok, so um working on an 89 crx dx. Car has a z6 swap and it runs fine, no vtec. Throwing vss code. So I start looking around for the problem, and everything looks fine. Then the owner tells me that the gauges don't work. So I tell him that is where the problem lies, as there will be no vss signal if the cluster isn't operating correctly. So the tach, fuel and temp gauges aren't working at all. I checked the pinout and I have power and ground like I should. I checked the resistance between the senders and the plugs on the cluster, and don't have any broken connectors. So what I can't find is what type of signal or voltage I should be looking for at the cluster, to test signal. Example: with one lead of meter on 12v, and the other one probing temp wire, I would see an increase in voltage as temp rises, or by checking from ground I would see a decrease in resistance. End example. I just am not sure what I'm looking for to know if I am getting weak signals for each gauge.also, I have tried two known good clusters, same problem. Also, I am well aware that the speedometer is cable operated and it does work, which is why I am looking to fix this problem by going to the cluster, and not going the trans scratching my head wondering why I can't find the wire. Thanks in advance.
