pay them no attention...if you let them get to you, then they will just keep on because they know it gets under your skin. blow them off and make some real friends that don't judge you by your ride. just out of curiousity, why a civic?

of course, that peer pressure crap is getting all over me, with people wanting to "tear me up on the streets"
and the friends that do support me all have different ideas on what to purchase for my car first. suspension, engine, audio, interior, exterior. i'm leaning towards the engine right now. what to get first?

Get something slow, so when you wreck it, you won't be going fast enough to kill yourself.
Sorry, a 16 year old in a fast car is a time bomb, as evidenced by all the threads we see about high school kids... excessive speed... not wearing seatbelts... all occupants died on the scene...
Be safe, be smart, wait til you know how to drive before you put yourself and others at risk in a fast car.

Look man, you need to do what YOU want to do....
Here are some points to consider:
1) Those hater friends are NOT your friends. I had a lot of those when I was 16, and I was better for blowing them off. My real friends give me light hearted ribbing for my little Si but we all respect what it does on the track.
2) The new Si is a great place to start. Great safety rating and not too fast for a beginner driver. Lot's of potential for more performance WHEN you get better behind the wheel. And it will last forever.
3) The Mazdaspeed Protege is a nice car but turbos kill reliability and your insurance company will get rich off your premiums on it. Plus, it's a Ford quality control vehicle and that scares me.
I'd say get the Si, start autocrossing to learn to drive like a pro, then invite your "friends" out to an autocross and show them what your little car (and you) can do. Then blow them off.

And still a kid at 30

They are probably hating because you are 16 and being given a brand new car.... Life is tough, huh?
I wish MY only problems were deciding what brand new car would be given to me, and how to impress my friends with it. Count your blessings and quit bitching.
