how to test a fuel sending unit?

Default how to test a fuel sending unit?

the fuel guage doesnt work right in my 91 wagon. anyone know how to test the sending unit?

there are two ways to test. You can test the guage for continunity with a multimeter to make sure you dont have any broken wires. You would do this test from the plug at the fuel sending unit. And you should be able to jump the connector and make sure the guage moves.

In order to test the sending unit you would have to measure resistance at the connector, and then add or subtract gas and watch the resistance change. Or if it is out of the car just move the float arm.

ok are there specific numbers i should be looking for on the multimeter when i check them?

There are I dont know them off the top of my head though. Try google or find a shop manual, maybe you have one.
