Default Just bought 95 honda accord, guy mislead about salvaged title ao wht to do?

1995 honda accord v6 2.7 liters. Seen it on craigslist, drove 70 miles to see it and felt the car was okay. guy said he is the 2nd owner had a few records of the car having the timing belt changed, has it smogged too. I couldn't get a car fax and my butt not thinking right bought the car. paid 2,750 for it. went homebought carfax after the fact, learned a huge lesson, only to see that according to carfax the car holds a salvaged title. He got the car from the dismatler which he said he bought it from his aunt. This was my first time buying a car so when i thought i cover everything i guess i didn't. Also not sure why i didn't see it but the darn mileage counter isn't moving. it's stuck at 171,999 between 172,000. Again not sure how i missed it. Drove the car well over 100 miles and the car seems to perform fine. steering, acceleration, braking, motor feels fine in all aspects. even had a friend who is 57 and was a mechanic for 20 years look and he agreed the car seemed good mechnically. well coming home i get off the freeway exit and stop, upon acceleration the dam speedometer is stuck at 20mph and its also quivering and the tach is actin funny too. Whats up anyone can lend some advice. I have already read a lot about people being mislead and being SOL so I am not sure what to do. I did call the guy, I was pissed and i called him a liar. He got mad and offered to take the car back however his phone died and it's already 10:00pm at night so I have to wait to talk again tomorrow. I was a bit taken back by him offering to take the car back because i figured that if he is shady he wouldn't even bother telling me he would take it back. I am so stuck because I felt o well i will live with it as long as engine is fine. But all the sudden the damn tach and speedometer actin funny so I am trippin. HELP! I may just be out of luck though. I do plan on going to DMV in morning to see if it has back fees and I am going to call the company that the paperwork says where it's from and see why the car is salvaged. What about the speedometer though and the tach? And what about him verbally assuring me that the car was clean title. I know I screwed up and I want some advice but if your going to ust bag me and not offer advice then please save it. Thanks.

If he's willing to take it back, go get your money' 95-97 V6 cars are odd ***** anyway. Carfax will not have all the information or unreported information on the vehicle.

Salvage title doesn't mean much. An older car that just had an insurance claim on it and was 'totaled out' can gain a salvage title. This does not mean the vehicle itself was wrecked. Just that the repairs needed surpassed ~75% of the vehicles current fair market value. With an older vehicle a simple fender bender or substantial paint damage can easily surpass the fair market value.
It does not mean that the car is a jalopy.

Yeah I've learned that when you can't get a VIN carfax get a license plate carfax.

i think you're SOL on this one if he doesn't take it back.

make the best of it. are there any check engine lights or is the D4 light flashing?

Mike it right. It doesn't matter much that it's a salvage except that it will affect your insurance rates and you'll have trouble reselling it.

Still, it's probably best to just sell it back to the guy.

So the guy has called me back, I took it to a auto body, Kniesels to be exact. The guy looked at it with his eyes and said that the back end had been damaged and not fixed rightly so. If i were to get hit from behind I could be seriously hurt or my kids that sit in the back. Not that an accident doesn't hurt anyways but the srtuctural integrity of the car isn't well because whoever fixed it didn't do it right. The guy says he gave me a chance to get it back last night which he did, but it was very late like 11pm at night and i have kids with me, not trying to go exchange money in unknown neighborhood at 11pm. Dude called me today saying no he won't give money back. I told him then I felt I have to report him to the Bureau of Automotive Repair agency because he knew it was unsafe and didn't tell me as well as the fact that it has a salvaged title and he told me it's not salvaged. So he said let him think about it and he will give me a call back. So frustrating and big lesson!

There are no check engine lights on, Just the speedometer and the odometer aren't working the tachometer is okay though. Speedometer is stuck between 19 and 20 mph. The d4 light is not flashing. Also the a/c is blowing hot air the guy said it just needs freon so im just not sure. it turns on with the a/c light

Speedo cable? Disconnect it and make sure it's spinning freely. Speedo being inop typically will not pass state inspections. Check requirements in your state. I hope everything works out well for you

You can't. There isn't one. The speedometer is run off a sensor on top of the differential housing. Its electronic, not mechanical.

So update on this 95 accord i bought. Dude won't take it back but I got his *** in court. It's illegal to buy and sell a car in CA (FOR PROFIT). He wrote it under his business name Finest Touch Automotive Detail and he didn't reg it or pay the taxes so that makes it illegal. I went to the DMV and thats what they told me. To collect my money I have to sue him so Monday morning I will be filling papers and from everything I have heard he is screwed in court especially since he used his business name to sell it to me. He doesn't have a dealers license. So now I need help fixing the car. I want to get the body fixed, its the driver side rear where the trunk is. This guy at body shop already told me the whole panel needs replacing and the welding needs to be done right. He said im looking at 4 to 5,000. Any comments on that?

DO NOT MODIFY THE CAR. Don't fix, replace, wash, burn, anything to the car.
Lock it up and leave it alone.

Leave it as is until all your court proceedings are done. The court may have a condition for the car to be returned to the PO or destroyed as well as having you be repaid.

Thanks for the advice I appreciate it because this is a lot to cover all the bases. I want to believe the best in people but this goes to show that there are more cons then good.

I'm glad you got some favor in court about it. I wouldn't put the money into getting it repaired, though. You could get a great Accord without a salvage title for 4-5k. Keep us updated.

Yes, because you obviously know so much about the car that you can correctly quote a user the price to fix a salvage titled Accord
