no 5th gear goes into gear but just revs!
one day i was driving my car and it just started revving.shifter was still in place it didnt pop out of gear.it will go into 5th but it just revs!all other gears work fine.anyone have any similar problems???
5th gear has it's own shift fork, willing to bet it broke. Only other thing I can think of is all the teeth that mesh with the synchro hub/sleeve all sheared off but that sounds rather extreme.
Also i forgot to mention when it happened it didnt make any noise, just acted like it popped into neutral.seems like if something did break it would make some noise.it will also go "into" 5th gear without the clutch with no grind.

If the gear itself is physically engaging you'll hear the grind if you shift without using the clutch. You already stated it is going into gear when you shift yet it free revs. Think about it.
Stumbled across this while doing research, and its related to the topic somewhat. OP no intends on jacking. But my reverse gear on my 90 hatchback is a pain in the *** to get in sometimes. Like it wont go in unless i put it into other gears first, that or unless i release the parking brakes and let it roll abit i guess to move the gears then it'll go right in. Any ideas?

Yes it is. Reverse gear doesn't have a synchro like the other gears do. Also it's located between 1st and 2nd gear on the shafts. As a habit I tend to shift into 1st gear before going into reverse and if it doesn't go in, as you mentioned, I let the car roll just a bit to get it into reverse.
To the OP the hardest part about doing any of the trans work is just getting the tranny out (not hard honestly) and splitting the case open. Once it's open you'll be able to see everything and hopefully the problem will be easy to identify.

Also a related question. I have a 91 CRX Si with L3 tranny. Rebuilt the transmission last week with carbon synchros and new bearings and diff bearings. Car shifted fine until on the freeway today it absolutely will not shift from neutral into 5th. (I do this after coasting for awhile down a hill, it used to go into 5th from neutral before i rebuilt my transmission). I also changed the clutch and had the flywheel surfaced with sachs clutch kit. Clutch chatters like a **** at low speeds, is this related? Any ideas as to why it wont engage, especially since its new? Thanks!

Thank you!

It should roughly be the same amount of work. Only thing that will have a huge impact is if your CRV is 4WD. If you can find a good complete transmission it might save you some time to just swap the transmission completely out. The only downside to fixing your existing transmission yourself is you won't see what's wrong until you open it up. For replacement parts I'd plan on a week of downtime (or you can just reinstall the transmission and drive it around until your parts arrive, twice the work, up to you etc.).
So what was the solution with no 5th gear and it jstu revs with no big noise associated with it. My 1992 honda accord did same thing. Please i don't want to hear pop the tranny out and just look. Does anyone know the answer
You bumped a 3 year old thread just to say you want someone to give you an answer without doing any of the investigative work yourself? Good job...
Yes and i spent time to find this specific thread about my specific issue so not to take my tranny down and see (which i am not doing anyways). Is not that whole point of asking.
