Fiberglass sunroof filler piece
Has anyone ever installed it? What exactly does it mean to rivet in the piece? Finally, has anyone had any bad experiences with cracking or improper fitment? My stock one is rusted out and no one seems to have any replacements that aren't rusted. Thanks.
There is an alternative to this piece of filler deal. If you have the time and money get a brand new DX roof skin and have it welded in. You get to completely remove the sunroof and never worry about it again <G>. It is also one of the options used for racing in Improved Touring. This is what we did. It may be possible to buy the panel that you need from Honda if you want to keep the roof stock, but what shape are the other parts of the unit in.

The only way to do away with a sunroof, is to cut the roof completely off and replace it with a non-sunroof equipped roof. By doing this I mean remove all glass and chop the roof completly off in the middle of each window, then cut the new roof to fit, weld it in, and viola no sunroof. Oh yeah then the fun part making it look perfect. The filler pannels are not the way to go. Theay crack and are junk. If you don't want to cut up your car, buy an HF or DX without a sunroof.
so no one has ever purchased the $125 filler piece from mmrusa.com. I don't see why it would crack. I don't need the sunroof to work and I don't want to spend 1000 bucks on custom welding in a new roof. I am looking for a cheap alternative that will fill the rusted out sunroof panel and won't rust later on.

TTT...I'm going through this same sh*t right now...wanna know if anyone has seen the filler on a CRX, or knows anyone who has one...
You can buy the sunroof panel new from Honda here http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...G+ROOF+%281%29
but it's kinda pricey...
That's why I too like the $125 = No more heavy *** sunroof = more headroom

I'm replacing mine as we speak. I've pulled the entire assembly (only weighted 25lbs. I thought it would be heavier). I'm going to replace it with a piece of sheet aluminum and rivet it into place.
I will have a completely rust free sunroof for sale in a couple of days if anyone's interested.
I will post pictures when done.

Dont go the sheet aluminum root as it rattles and will cause the paint to flake and it introduce more rust. Use the filler with your sunroof molding and set screws because the rivet come lose after awhile.
Rivets don't come loose do they? What about lexan race windows, do the rivets on those come loose? It's an honest question because I don't know
Why would the aluminum roof introduce more rust? If you seal everything up properly it should be fine, right?

Airplanes are held together with rivets, I think the roof will be fine. I also plan to put a bead of silicone between the panel and the car so that its watertight and rattle free.
Has anybody ever tried a glass roof?? Not the JDM glasstop, but like an aftermarket moonroof??
depends on the rivets you use. pop rivets are not what planes use. they have special rivets that are smashed together tight in the hole. not much chance of them loosening up in a car. but you need a air powered riveter and a friend to hold a heavy piece of metal on the back side. just go to car-part.com and find a used sunroof in good shape.
damn newbie status would not let me post this response
as far as rust the aluminum flexes and rubs the paint off. If you do use it make sure the edges are nice and round.

I looked into the possibility of replacing my roof panel with a non-sunroof model when I had my SI. But that idea quickly went out the indow when I founf out that it would cost more than just picking up a DX of HF. So if you want to get rid of the sunroof for weight reasons, this is a better way to go. You also have the option of selling your SI to recoup cash - something you can't do if you change the roof panel on your SI.
Just noticed the incorrect fix by another writer. The roof skin replacement method only requires 3 parts for the car (plus the roof squirter) . Your friendly Honda parts department will present you or the body shop the roof panel assembly and the rubber filler strips. The windshield comes out along with taking the hatch off. All of the spot welds are removed along the 4 sides of the roof and it is cut away and the new on positoned and welded in-the end.
I am leaving out the removal of headliner and all of the pieces that are attached to the sunroof version. This is NOT the cheapest way to go-but is cosmetically the cleanest. The alternative is to find a NEW panel and other parts for the mechanicals and repair the assembly. This means replacing the rubber parts, track guides, maybe the motor, etc.
Have fun

This whole thread is absured!!! The sunroof weight is fairly minimal, and unless it's a full race car, not a concern at all! Most of you could take out your speakers and lose more weight than the sunroof assembly, hell, take a good dump. Part of the reason for buying an Si is the roof, even if the electronics fail, it can still be manually operated buy using the supplied hex key in the tool kit, and inserting it into the hole behind the dome light, just take out the quarter turn plastic cap. It sucks to have to pay 200+ for a factory roof, but it only happens once every 10-15 years, so pony up and don't be a ricer! Please don't kill another CRX, they're dieing every day, and we don't need perfectly good ones getting ruined because some cheap bastard want's to try and save a hundred bucks. This thread is making me angry

Honestly, the most likely fix as of right now is replacing the panel with a brand new one...whew, I bet you're glad to hear that. Now am I officially *NOT* a riceboy? Or does using *ASTERISKS* and *CAPS* in my post make me a riceboy as well? Some people just throw the word "riceboy" in whenever they see something they don't like.
How much does the entire sunroof assembly weigh? I'm guessing 30 lbs, including rails and whatnot...and a fiberglass replacement would weigh probably 4 lbs at the most. So a 26 lb weight reduction is totally meaningless? So what's the point of carbon fiber or fiberglass hoods? Is that "ruining" good CRX's?
Who said it was just about saving money anyway? Weight reduction is always good, and it's a rare situation where you can save weight and money at the same time. So if it's a viable option, a lot of people are likely to go that route.
How exactly is it considered "ruining" good CRX's to plug the sunroof? Are you eventually going to buy every CRX in the world excluding the ones with plugged sunroofs? Is that why it makes you so mad?
Oh, and if you can lose 20-30 lbs by taking a "good dump", I'm kinda scared. I sure can't.
