Default Crank Pulley comes off at low RPM!!!?!!?!!?!

So a couple months ago I spun a rod bearing in my vitara built Y8. I replaced the bearings on my own b/c I was not wanting to tow it to my new house. Needless to say, I spun the bearings again.

I took it to a machine shop for them to rebuild it and I got it back and finally got it put in. Started it up and the turbo was blowing oil.

I pulled the turbo out and replaced all the seals and bearings and what not tonight and put it back in and started it up.

Drove it about a mile and turned around to head back home and all of a sudden I lost all power. Popped the hood and the crank pulley came off....

Man I'm tired of turning wrenched on this thing. That's my experiences with my Y8 over the last few months.

I've read through a bunch of threads and figured out that there can't be much wrong with my motor unless it messed up the crank, but hopefully not b/c it was only turning about 1500-2000 rpm when the pulley came off. And also read that there isn't much more to it than putting it back on using the special tool that can be rented from autozone.

There are a couple of questions that I do have...
1. Should I put loctite red on the bolt when I put it back in?
2. Does autozone carry the woodruff key for the crank?
3. Is it normal for the engine to crank over really fast when the crank pulley comes off?
4. Should it start with the crank pulley off?

***Another thing I noticed was that when I tried to start it immediately after the pulley fell off, and not knowing that the pulley fell off, it cranked reallllllly fast but didn't start. I sure hope that it didn't jump time some how even tho' the pulley isn't directly attached to the timing belt.... I didn't continue cranking on it to get it to start b/c I didn't know what happened at the time. My idea for the reason it was cranking was was b/c there wasn't a load from the alternator and power steering pump.

Inspect the slot in the crank for the woodruff key before you reassemble.
It may be worn/chipped and could recause the problem. Inspect the pulley grooves also. They are softer than the crank and are also probably damaged.
Cheapest fix if the above are problems is to clean the crankshaft slot with acetone, use a little JB Weld to fix any rounded/chipped area in the slot, install a new woodruff key and new pulley, torque down and let sit overnight.

If you're doing bearings again and cracking everything open anyway and you have a crank laying around and want to refit bearings Then - aw heck just do an engine swap.

Well if it needs to be rebuilt, it's not my problem. The machine shop that assembled it for me can do it again and buy me a new crank if I need one.

DO NOT put loctite on the bolt!

Climb under it and inspect the crank/pulley and the keyway. It's possible it wasn't tighten down by the shop. Wouldn't be the first time i've seen it.

Thanks for the stern no, exactly the kind of answers I was looking for lol! I definitely won't be putting locktite on it.

Would it be okay to go by AutoZone and use the woodruff key/keyway that they have?

After I posted up the thread I txt the guy who assembled my motor, who is coming over to my house tonight to see what happened (I am fully capable of doing this but don't feel that I should since I just paid him $1100!) and I asked if he had the tool to hold the crank in place while tightening the bolt... you're gonna get a kick out of his reply lol

This is all he said back "My hands". I'm not turning a single wrench for this issue. It's all on them.

Then stop trying to fix it. They can turn around and say that YOU caused the issue and not be willing to fix it.

Loosing the crank pulley wont cause the engine to shut down until the battery is dead from not being charged. If it's turning over really fast you either broke the timing belt, or it slipped.

haha. Yeah, loctite on those bolts is a big no no. if you think they are hard to get off normally, wait until you fight one with loctite on it.

it probually would be okay, but personaly I would stick with Honda parts in that area. I've never used a woodruf key from autozone so I can't say for sure.

lol.

I do have to agree with Marc on this though, don't do anything to the car until they see it. They could easily shift the fault onto you. Hopefully, it was just something stupid and it didn't damage the crank.

Haha you are the grumpiest. Guess you missed the part where I said I wasn't going to touch it. It happened last night and I haven't touched it. The guy who assembled the motor is coming out to my house tonight to fix it, you also must've missed that part too. lol

Which would be the same as if a belt just came off which makes complete sense.

Yeah, I'm not putting any loctite on it.

And the guy who assembled it is coming out tonight to take a look at it. Makes me a little scared that it's cranking really fast and it just completely died when it happened...

I'll be sure to post of the findings later tonight after he checks it out.

I didn't miss anything. I wasn't the one talking about Loctite and buying Woodruff keys. If you weren't going to touch it then why ask about them?

Because he's coming out to my house to fix it and since it's at my house and he's going to be working on it, I'll have the stuff there. I already have the loctite (which I'm not going to use) and since I'm going by AutoZone to rent the tool since they don't have one, I might as well pick some woodruff keys up since I don't think I can make it to Honda to get one.

Don't buy anything. Don't suggest anything. You paid a lot of money for crappy work and these people do not deserve your assistance. They need to make it right because that's what you paid them to do. Any extra expense does not need to be burdened by you. Not one thin dime.

Yeah but the circumstances are a little different, I'm friends with the guy that built it but not so much the owner of the shop.

I just noticed that you're from Oak Ridge, Marc.

Yeah. And I don't let friends do work on my car or my house because of this same kind of awkward situation.

The work was done at a shop? I would have made them tow the car BACK to the shop to fix it. For $1,100? You better believe it.

I don't recall calling it awkward. It may be awkward for you but not for me.

Anyways, the bolt and woodruff key are missing and it jumped time by 2-3 teeth. Pistons and valves are ok.

The reason it shut down was b/c the the crank position sensor couldn't read the little cog gear around the crank b/c it was off a little.

Going to put it all back together tomorrow and fire it up.

Plus considering the amount of money that I have into the whole car, I would rather it sit in my garage as opposed to someone's shop.

Yeah, crank was fine. He's doing a compression test today just to make absolute sure theres no damage to any valves.

I hope it works out for you but being that this was the same guy that only hand tightened it in the first place, I'd proceed with caution.

Just to update everyone, the Civ is purring like a kitten. Got everything back together and torqued the bolt to 145 lb-ft and fired it up with no problems. Only thing is the turbo is still blowing a little bit of oil. I mustn't have gotten the groove that the piston ring on the turbine shaft clean enough so oil is getting by it. Gonna start tearing it all apart again this week.
