Default draining oil and checking it

what is a material to use for draining the oil to see if there is any debris, metal, etc in it before dropping pan?

This seems like a good idea, I've also seen aluminum mesh used but it obviously doesn't filter out the tiniest of debris.

coffee filter takes forever. they don't flow oil for some reason.
a cloth-like paper towel would work (like a blue shop towel). line the inside of a funnel with it and pour slowly.
