My 1999 Accord F23A1 4 cyl with 207K miles has a camshaft seal leak and bad crankshaft pulley so I pulled the timing belt. I replaced the camshaft seal. The balancer pulley seal looks like it's leaking too. But that's a tight space and I'm looking for tips on how to install and with what tool?

There was oil running down the front and lower covers and underneath the crank shaft but once I pulled the crank pulley I couldn't tell if the seal was leaking or oil dripping down from the cam. Don't want to really mess with it and I thought I read somewhere that crank seals typically don't fail on the 4 cylinders?

The TDC electrical sensors, the wire harness and connectors are covered with oil and wondering if I can clean with brake cleaner? Since it's been soaked in thick oil for a long time, should I bother replacing the wire harness to the sensors?

 

I always recommend replacing the crank and b-shaft seals when the T-belt comes off whether they appear to be leaking or not. it's double the work if you have to go replace them before the timing belt needs replacement again (and you likely will need to). they are cheap and not hard to install.

the sensor: just wash it down with brake parts cleaner, it'll be fine.

 

I install the balance shaft seal, I just remove the 12mm bolt that holds the sprocket on, use a little hooked pick or tiny screwdriver to remove the old seal, then I get a deep socket the same diameter as the new seal and pry the socket with a screwdriver to force the new seal on.

Get the new seal from the dealer because it'll come with a new bracket that'll hold the seal in place. This little bracket is nice because I've seen TONS of Accords where the balance shaft seal will just fall out randomly one day.

 

Getting the seal out was easy and installed the new one. Can you tell me generally how far recessed the seal should go. I should have taken a picture since my memory ain't what it used to be and I took the seal out a few days ago and just got around to working on the car today. I think I pushed the seal in too far - it doesn't seem to bottom out like the cam.

 

don't have my service manual handy... but off the top of my head i would say 1mm recessed is probably close.
