Default just bought a 96 accord LX and have questions

I just bought a 96 accord LX and have a few questions. The guy I bought it from says it was a standard 2.2 car changed to a 2.2 VTEC SOHC and said that the VTEC is not working because it needed a VTEC ecm for this VTEC/auto combo that is in the car. The production date is 9/95 which makes it a 96. Everything I am coming up with is that it came with this engine according to Carquest and Oreilly's. It has a blown head gasket and I am trying to get the right head set to fix it, but don't want to invest the money if there is NO way this combination was available and I won't be able to make the VTEC function. I have not pulled any codes yet to see what it had becsause the battery was losing connection and cranked one time when I put it on the trailer. Are there any tricks on replacing this head gasket after I get the head checked out? Is there a how to thread? I have the Haynes manual on it but sometimes the gurus know tricks that aren't in there. I know it ran hot also.

get the 2.2 VTEC head gasket set. Even though the engine's VTEC is not being used it still is a VTEC engine.

I know it is a VTEC motor because it is wrote all over the valve cover. I have come up with is 94-95 could have a regular 2.2 or a 2.2VTEC. 96 has either a VTEC2.2 or a V6. This car is a 96, so I don't know where the previous owner got the idea of the car not coming with this engine.
