Default cost effective caliper upgrade??

so i've been doing a lot of research in looking into a brake system overhaul on my 90 si and i was wondering if anyone ha ever used 2 piston calipers off a dsm? or even the factory 4 piston calipers off of a fc or fd rx7? both of which are fixed mounted instead of floating calipers and are quite a bit cheaper than going through say fastbrakes to upgrade or any of the other companies who currently have big brake kits available.

What do you hope to gain by doing this?

pretty much the same thing everyone who spends 2k on spoon monoblocks, greater stopping power, without the price tag considering like i said for instance the 4 piston rx7 oem calipers are $5o some dollars through advance auto, so why not do something different and save some money at the same time... like stated it was just an idea to see if anyone else has ever tried a swap like this

Wheel clearance is an issue with most upgrades like this.

Way back in the day, SS Work's in Japan used to offer a 300ZX caliper (shaved with the SS Work's logo instead) with a caliper relocate bracket and rotor. I don't remember the cost of it but it would probably need certain 16's at least if not 17" wheels. That's similar to the FD RX7 upgrade.

Are you trying to run a smaller diameter wheel like a 15" wheel? If so, check the Brake Expert sticky at the top of the forum FIRST. There's a Honda/Acura compatibility chart that may be difficult to decipher but has a lot of good information.

yeah trust me i've been thinking about that too ha. I plan to run the current 15" wheels that i have on the ef now.. and i'm really not sure how clearance is going to be until i get to physically put the rx7 caliper down there which will hopefully be on thursday... I looked at a locally owned fd which come with factory 16" wheels and theres about a half in of clearance from the caliper to the wheel on those. and the rotors i'll be running should be around 10.9" give/take a lil bit. and i'e seen on the sticky about the 11.1" upgrade but it still retains the single piston calipers

If you're having trouble locking up Summer/Race tires on integra brakes with good pads on a 4th generation civic I'm impressed.

That said, what tires are you running to justify radical cross-make brakes?

I've got s2000 rotors/calipers on the front and brake fade is something I'm no longer familiar with in my racing.

-as far as tires go i'm on dunlop direzza star spec z1's

what model car do you have the s2k front brakes on i've seen a couple peoples setups running that. what are the specs of the s2k set up ? calipers your running? rotors? rotor size?

You consider Hawk HPS to be a good pad? That's worrisome. It's probably a fine pad, but it's by no means "aggressive."

Here's my setup:

Technically they're RSX-S front rotors, same diameter as S2000 rotors but has the correct hub size. 11.8" rotor

And how would it be s2000 brakes without s2000 calipers?

Four pot calipers do not mean more braking force. Do not get hung up getting some.

Never said i thought they were an aggressive pad just said good, for now anyway car is mostly street driven and until I get out of school in august won't see any autox or track days. But thanks for the info on your setup. Your running 16" wheels? Assuming those 11.8s aren't fitting under a set of 15s

No, they won't fit any 15" wheel.

If you aren't pushing the limits of your brakes, why the need for some radical setup?

Seriously though, OEM brake upgrades are plenty for the street. If you're just going for bling, then that's a different story. To each his own.

Euro spec EP3 civic type R front brakes. 300mm disc dia with the calipers can fit behind 15" wheels.
Another option?

Are you sure they won't fit 15"? I will pm to talk about it, but the S2000 caliper/rotor combo is basically common to the 06+ Cvici Si, the RSX-S and the S2000, right?

This is a 300mm rotor, and it BARELY clears a Rota 15x8, but it does clear it.

It will if you use a smaller rotor on the DX knuckle, PM'd.

Keep in mind the knuckle on the car is made for those and will inherently have better clearance. Depending on the bracket you have to make you'll more than likely end up with a lot less wheel clearance. It's the nature of the beast.

But look into 15" or 16" wheels with a lot of barrel clearance. I've had great luck with my Regamasters and TE37's but terrible luck with my GABs and a friend's Advan RG's. Wheel design will be as integral as caliper location for you.

Spoon calipers won't provide any extra braking force. They will provide better pad wear and better modulation. As well as lighter steering feel. If the rotor and the pad are the same size, the friction area is the same.

It's kinda hard to beat an OEM upgrade Matt.
A good OEM upgrade setup will perform the same if not better than the previous mentioned Fastbrakes setup IMO

Yes, but on a stock 2006+ Civic Si (also 300mm), which uses this caliper, I know it clears 15" wheels. I am not sure if it clears all of the OE 15" wheels, but at least some.

z1's and hawk's should be pretty good for even a few hot laps really.. i personally think any amateur driver would have a hard time driving them to the point of really needing more. (short of doing round robin 100mph passes at a drag strip or something ridiculously abusive like that.)

what's your brake fluid like? if you've ever boiled it or if you can't remember the last time you gave the system a thorough flush.. do it. 1000% improvement for $6.99 or less.

I just upgraded my 9.4"rotors and vx brakes and knuckles off my 1994 to 10.3" rotors using integra calipers and knuckles off a 99ex civic for under $100 (including knuckles, hubs, calipers). I would call that cost effective. I did upgrade to SS line, new rotors, and put in new ball joints so I have a little bit more into them now closer to $450 all together.

I am already running z1's and love them. I also decided to go with Hawks HPS pads and look forward to installing them this weekend.
