Default help me identify this ticking noise

this been bothering me for a while

the engine seems to run strong but it sounds like a tractor.

its not a very agressive build so i didnt think it would be so loud
gsr engine with pr3 pistons BC3+ cams and sk2 intake manifold

itr oil pump new water pump etc all was done

tuned few months ago

theres a noise coming from cam gear area that i can hear and cant figure out what it it.
its not the plastic rubbing and its not the water pump. its a ticking sound coming from cam gears

you can hear the ticking right after i remove that USPS cardboard piece

i covered everything with cardboard to eliminate other noises so it can be heard better...

Get you a screwdriver and hold the handle to your ear and the tip to different points on the motor. Check your injectors specifically. I noticed a lot more ticking noise with some rebuilt 460cc I have in my motor now compared to the stock injectors. If nothing else you can use this method to determine where the noise is originating.

Good luck

car doesnt smoke doesnt burn oil in vtec coolant stays same level

i added zinc oil additive also as a safety measure for the break in period.

the head had bent valves(not very bad) i was only able to tell they are bent by rolling them on flat surface. and they were bent probably less than half a mil.

but i didnt have money to replace valve guides or valve seats i had to pretty much test my luck or not finish the build at all and part it out.

so far i have 1000 miles on it

what i personally suspect is tha the guy might have some valves that were really bent and replaced them leaving only the barely deformed ones in it.

and now the valves are either too deep in the seat or are wobbly and making that ticking noise.

LOL Of course if you have a stethoscope that would of course work better than the old screwdriver trick.

Some out of round or uneven valve seats might be your problem now that I hear you had bent valves from the previous owner. Could be guides like you said too. could be a couple of things there that your stethoscope or my screwdriver can't determine.

Good Luck

i bought an electronic stethoscope and pinpointed the ticking sound to the cam gear area. went around the engine and everything else sounds normal.
i can clearly hear it through the plastic timing blelt cover and when i put stethoscope on the 10mm bolts that hold it its even more clearer.
its a very clear ticking sound

If you are checking your lifters you might try checking your valve clearances at the same time? You prob. already checked that too but it's a thought.

can lifters go bad? i didnt know. how can i tell?
i did adjust the valves recently before and after tune.

i listened from the intake side exhaust side and all around the block
i head injectors
and i hear the valves through the exhaust and intake everything sounds good

the cam gear area is the only place i can hear that ticking noise which is very strange

i red somewhere that sometimes the valve lash will measure correctly but it will still make ticking sound when the engine runs. because its worn out or angled or something like that i didnt really understand it too well. anyone can give me a hint what i should look for to see if i have one of those worn out lifters/rocker arms maybe?

So you are positively sure on the front of the engine? It can work down from the lifters, most likely hydraulic so you should have zero valve lash. Check the marks on the valves for uneven wear for the guides. Can it be your seats ' yeah maybe but if you took it for a drive it would be a lack of power due to vaccum leakage. Mostly in the valve train but checking your belt routing would for anything odd can do it. For your troubles pull the spec on the knock sensor because this should show you on how big your trouble is.

Which is the front. One issue is these lifters have littler pin holes on them that can clogged up with bad maintence which can then cause them to not move on the inside with oil starvation.

Lifters can get sludge build up, they stick and when the do free up they tap. But if you recently had head work done, sounds like you did, I wouldn't bet on that, I'd say valve guides, the tolerances are so slight even a slightly bent valve can cause issues.

Okay since we still haven't realized front is where the timing belt is at. Did you isolate and bother checking it
