What is this on the catback exhaust?
Because I don't know what I should call it, I don't know what words to use in Search. Tried a few searches with no results.
What is it? And what does it do? Or what does it suppose to do?
TIA

Not a joke. Lots of newer cars are using them.
That's not what the OPs picture is of but here's an example on a Ford Mustang. Called an "exhaust damper". Supposed to absorb small vibrations through the exhaust.

I'm pretty sure those random tubes are in exhausts for the same reason some stock intake snorkels (specially Hondas) have the "random" dead end tubes attached to them, silencers/removes whistles etc. Noise reduction.

Does someone know or guess what type of sound does it control? High pitch? Low? Smooth it out? Drone?
What if I was to custom make one and add it to a Magnaflow system? What do you think the result would be? Your opinions and theories are welcome.

It cancels out certain sound wavelengths. So if during R&D Honda's equipment shows that the 200hz (for example) frequency is causing the drone they do their maths and figure out the right length and volume of a Helmholtz resonator needed. The resonator then fills with exhaust and fires back the 200hz back at the exhaust stream which cancels out that frequency. I don't know which freq ours cancels but if you measure it and the exhaust path you should be able to figure it out. As far as adding it to another brand - you'd have to do EVERYTHING all over since the same freq would probably not be the problem.
What a weird auto world we live in, Honda, Ford etc come up with all these devices to quiet down a car, then on the other hand, BMW plays engine sounds through the audio system to bring back the sound of performance. WTF???
The new BRZ/FRZ pipes engine noise into the cabin as well. Stupid if you ask me.
