Default Best motor oil for a 400xxx mileage 92 Accord LX

Title says it all, swapped to Mobil 1 HM but it seems to cause the engine to idle loudly. Any thoughts on what kind of oil is best/advised? Thanks in advance.

I would try Amsoil. Quite expensive but worth it cause you know it's quality. I've switched over from Mobile 1 too and notice a huge difference. My engine tends to run smoother from what I can feel.

Awesome, is there a specialized dealer or can it be purchased online? None of the auto stores ive checked in my area seem to have that in stock. (Kragen/O'reily, Autozone)

amsoil is a waste of money in your accord. put in valvoline maxlife 5w-30 in your car and it will keep chugging away

My 1st oil change was with Mobil One high mileage. My Accord seem to be doing quite well with it. With that being said, Valvoline would be my next best oil of the Mobil isn't working out for you.

Im using the recycled valvoline oil right now and its working great. Ill never use Mobil 1 or Amsoil in an engine that doesnt require it. That "smooth" feeling you get is from all the money you wasted using synthetic oil.q

I've always preferred Valvolene Max-Life. But I never got mine up to 400k! Awesome!

If I could find the valvoline recylcled oil for a decent price I would use that.

I just switched from Castrol high mileage to valvoline high mileage. I ONLY use Bosch oil filters.

What brand oil was used the last 20 years / 400,000 miles in this car? It must be pretty good so why change now....

The only time I use synthetic in an old engine is just before a smog check - buddy is a smog tech and if the motor has any blow-by it will reduce emissions compared to dino oil. otherwise Valvoline works great

penzoil 5w30 non synthetic, the one that has a cleaning agent in it. I might try 5w30 or 10w30 non synthetic high mileage oil next time.

ive seen semi-synthetic oil and im wondering if anyone runs that.

serious?

oil should be changed regardless every 6 months or it'll break down, unless your car is burning a lot of oil in which case its constantly getting new oil so you just have to change the filter. oil filter should at least be getting changed lol...

I got it, I was poking fun at you. Asking you what specifically in the oil will break down. Nevermind. The oil will not necessarily break down with in a certain time period.

Synthetic oil doesn't break down as quickly as conventional - that's the whole point of synthetic. That and they can achieve very good cold viscosities.

But on a high mileage engine, synthetic is normally considered a bad idea unless you want oil leaks. keeping your engine oil clean is your best bet.

I previously used 5W-30 Pennzoil and Napa Gold filter. Now I use Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic high mileage and a Napa Gold filter.

As you may have noticed already asking this kind of question in a (relatively) general forum will get you so many different answers you may as well just pick at random.

not to say any of the answers given so far are good, or bad, but to really get down to the nitty gritty and know you got the right stuff, surf on over to this site- Bob is the Oil Guy there is more info there about oil and auto lubricants than you'll ever care to know.
