Accord TCU Issue
I have a 1992 Accord Wagon LX and have been having transmission issues.
It got stuck in 3rd gear and wouldn't shift at all - I changed the transmission fluid and there were bits of metal so I figured the transmission was shot - I replaced that and it does the exact same thing ...
I pulled the TCU and sent it in to a place that rebuilds them - they said it can't be rebuilt and I need to replace it (so at least confirmed that the TCU was the problem). Problem is I can't find a place that has this one in stock that doesn't cost more than $600 (local dealership - and the car isn't worth it). The part number for mine 28100-PXO-A32-M1
I can find the 28100-PXO-A31-M1 in stock - which I've been told is for the EX model but can't find a credible source for that either.
Does anyone know if these are interchangeable? With the A31 work in the LX?
Thanks!

Hi I have a 92 ex wagon, when i got it it had a TCU from a 90 accord lx in it. I have used a TCU from a 95 LX sedan to control it it shifted fine! I currently have a TCU from a 93 LX sedan controlling it. Any TCU from a 92-93 will work the only differences are the shift points between the sub models. I went to the local pull and pay and pulled several TCU's until i found one that had been rebuilt. pull the cover off and inspect the inside for any leaky Caps or burnt resistors. good luck to you. Joe
So I got a new TCU and it worked great ... for like 5 minutes. But this time I don't think it's the TCU.
So here's the saga:
92 Accord Wagon LX
I replaced the transmission before I installed the new TCU - that's when I thought the problem was the transmission itself. So when I started it up it shifted fine into reverse, drove down the driveway and for about a mile just fine shifted into every gear without a problem. I got to a point to turn around and go home from my test drive and it seemed like it popped out of gear when I was stopped to turn around.
So I tried to shift it back into gear and it would make a small grinding noise each time I tried to put it into a gear and then do nothing - no R, 1, 2, D3 or D4 - when I tried to put it into park it would make a really awful gear-on-gear grinding noise. I shut it off and put it in park and it still rolled - definitely not in park.
Called the tow truck and waited - while I was waiting I tried it again and voila - it popped into gear - drove about 1/2 mile and it popped out of gear while actually driving on the road. So I pulled over and had the same thing - small grinding noise when trying to put it into gear, bad grinding when trying to put it in park etc.
I did the same thing again a bit later and it would go into gear briefly but wouldn't stay there.
I'm thinking it's the transmission I put in - it was salvage and had been out of a car for about a year - but looked like it was in decent condition ... and it was cheap.
Any thoughts? I'd rather not replace the tranny again if I can avoid it.

Right - I got the TCU stuff figured out and have a working TCU @mangabay - it wasn't too bad, but I'll keep you in mind if I need to do it over again ...
What I'm wondering about now is if anyone has any idea what's going on with the grinding and not shifting - is it a transmission issue or a TCU issue?
It ran fine for about a mile - then when I stopped it was like it wasn't in gear - made short quiet grinding noises when I tried to put it in gear and loud gear-on-gear type grinding noises when I tried to put it in park.
Could it be an issue with the shift cable? Any thoughts?
