2012 civic or 2011
Anything before 2.4L was introduced. 2.4 has an integrated exhaust manifold, which makes less flow than a true 4 port exhaust manifold/header. Not that more torque isn't fun. Just trust that the older engine is a better platform to start with & with a few reasonable mods the older model will put a stompin' on that new platform.

I personally prefer the '06-'11 style. I've heard the '12 has better steering and shifter feel. It just comes down to personal preference.
I have never driven any older civics, so my opinion is biased... I did drive an Evo for a number of years, and the 2012 civic is sexy as hell... I love the torque. I do also own a 2012 ex sedan.
The after market may be just starting for the 2012. It looking at the civic track record, a strong flow of aftermarket parts is sure to follow. I for one would say the 2.4 has a strong case to be fought as to whether or not the 2.0 will be stomping it in the near future.

My problem with the 2012 design is that they look.... like everything else on the road. Honda managed to style away any distinction. When I see an 8th gen I can spot 'em a mile away. When I see a 9th gen I'm usually cruising right past it before I realize it's even a Honda let along a Civic.
Just my $.02.

wrong, integrated exhaust manifold is more free flowing than 4 port exhaust mani and less **** to deal with.

I test drove a 09 sedan, it was really nice, but I like the 12 better, and the K24 is really nice. Yeah the K20 has vtec on the exhaust cam too, but I prefer the torque of the K24 to the louder vtec crossover of the K20. Integrated exhaust manifold isn't a big deal at all, it simplifies a turbo setup big time.

He is probably thinking that the manifolds exhaust pipe mating surfaces would makea easy turbo mounting location. This could happen if the turbo came with an adapter for the bolt pattern and that it was set up in a way to allow for cooling clearance and such. Most likely this has been looked at already...
too early to tell which platform is better to start with honestly. We havent seen what the 12 can do with flashpro.
Its easier to bolt a turbo onto the 12, 4 bolts instead of like 14 lol

There's a lot of aftermarket support for the 8th gen, so if your wanting to do a bunch of stuff right off the bat then you'll have better luck with an 8th gen. I just prefer the 9th gen coupe over the 8th gen coupe, but I do like the 8th gen sedan better than the 9th. Stock for stock the 9th gen is a better daily driver due to the k24, and personally like the entire car better. You just need to test drive them both like I did and consider your plans for it. My plans are to pay it off first and keep it low mileage. By that time aftermarket will be a lot bigger and the 10th gen will be near. Hopefully it will be direct injected, talk about torque.
Oh yeah and my '12 gets 28mpg city and 35 hwy, way higher than advertised.

I've yet to see a Honda that doesn't get much better MPG than advertised. In my '08 Si coupe, I was getting 33-35MPG on the freeway with the AC on.
I have the 8th sedan now and I have a friend with the 9th. I switch with her for a bit and felt like the 9th is better. Most of the drivers on the road only do simple bolt ons and at most cams. I myself am one of those people. Therefore I felt the daily "usable" power and torque is more appealing. The 9th gen si hit all those points which is important to me. If I didnt already bought this 8th gen I would definitely go for the 9th gen si.
According to everyone's beliefs, If you like owning a "more potential" (I put that in quotation because that seems to be the conception about the 8th gen.....), heavily modded in the near future, then the 8th gen.
(I myself dont see it that way because I think the market hasnt boomed for the 9th gen yet.. )ANd i own an 8th gen. If I havent driven the 9th gen, I think the 8th IS THE BEST si imo.
If you want a realistic fun daily usable tq/power band, basic bolt ons only, newer car, then the 9th gen. I myself would vote for the 9th gen. I hope this helps.
