Default y5 block, y8 head ecu question

hello all.

im new here but have been lurking for a long time.

anyways i just bought a 99 dx hatch. it has a d16y5 swap with a y8 head in it and vtec is not hooked up. it has a p2e ecu in it.

i also have a 2000 ex coupe with d16y8 stock ecu but has a spun rod bearing.

my question is can i just use the ecu from my ex in my hatch? and run wires for vtec. or does the hx block change things?

btw both are 5 speed

Yes, I think you can use the P2P ECU from the 00 Civic EX, but what engine wire harness does the 99 DX hatch have?

D16Y5/7/8 blocks are identical. Only differences are oil pans and if I remember correctly the girdles might be a little different. Since both cars are OBD2B you can use the ECU out of your 00.

What preludeguy means is OBD2B. 96-98 = OBD2A, 99-00 = OBD2B.

Whoops yeah good catch. My old EK has a 96 so I just got used to always saying OBD2A but yes he is correct it's actually 2B.

Awesome. Thanks guys.

Im sure i could find it if i looked but anyone know of a diy or something for running vtec wires?

Also im pretty sure its a y7 harness still. Theres a few unused connectors hangin in the engine bay.

And i read somewhere the y8 knock sensor is diferent. Any clarification?

Post clear pictures of the free connectors and show their wire colors.

Use those schematics for your wiring. As far as a how-to on the VTEC wiring I'm pretty sure you can use this for guidance, just use the OBD2B pinouts instead.

So just follow the steps but the pinouts (ex A14) may be different on OBD2B. Sorry, couldn't find a DIY like this just for OBD2B.

EDIT: Whoops looks like that second diagram is for B-Series. Basically A8 is vtec solenoid, C15 is the pressure switch, D6 knock sensor..

Also the Y5 doesn't have a knock sensor so snag that from the EX as well

well i switched the ecu's and started it. idle was kinda bouncing and idling high. now i know why. the only cel i had was iacv, vtec pressure sensor or something like that, and secondary o2 heater circuit (which i already had before switching ecu)

but since i have to get the knock sensor off my ex ill just wait and do the knock sensor vtec wires iacv and swap intake manifolds all at once instead. anyone have a guesstimate how long of a job that is? ive yet to remove an intake manifold but ive heard its a pita.

but heres those pics

i just realized thats the oil pressure sensor but thats one i was talking about

and this one was just laying on the tranny.

as for the wire colors they all look black cuz their really dirty but i think their -
yellow/black
green/red
blue/green
black/white

again those could be wrong though

For the information to be of any use, you must reliably match wire colors to connectors shown in the pictures.

First pic VTEC solenoid
Second pic is for the secondary 02 sensor
The two sensors you have codes for. Probably because whoever did the swap didn't extend the 2nd 02 to the position after the catalytic converter. Do you have a cat on the car? Also they probably didn't hook up VTEC to the ECU. Also looking at your first sensor pic the VTEC pressure switch has no wires coming out of it. You'll have to run wiring for both those sensors for VTEC to work. You also probably don't have the IACV wired to two wire as for why you have that code. Take some pics of the intake manifold area around the throttle body and I can confirm. Here's the wiring you'll have to do along withe knock sensor:
