Default valve springs is there a top and a bottom

When installing new valve springs, is there a top and a bottom end? Meaning is it possible to install them incorrectly? Backwards???

Yes...there like a progressively wound coilover or something...tighter(sometimes hard to tell) coils go down.. look at some pics.
