Default 97 Civic Ex coupe, Automatic d16y8. Tranny help..

Hey guys my pops has a 97 civic coupe with the d16 y8, cars automatic..

the other day, Without any other symptoms the car slipped out of gear and the trans just didnt do anything anymore, no reverse, and no other forward gears..

so.. turned off the car disconnected battery, reconnected it and tried driving it again, got going again for about 20 seconds, until the same thing happen, Pretty much when it happens if u turn the car off and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or disconnect the battery, It will work again for a few seconds.. then just slip out again.

the check engine will light, come on in the situation but at random, so i cant use the crappy scanner i have beause it dosnt do history codes.

Anyone know if this is a common problem with these cars?
I mean the car does have 218,XXX miles, but there was no indictation that there was a trans problem, never slipped, fluid has been maintained, not beat on.. and just one day it completley stops working so i was thinking maybe some kind of shift solenoid or somthing?

Sorry to bump an old thread but did you ever figure this out? The same EXACT thing happened to my 99 Civic d16y8 AT and I'd greatly appreciate any input.
