1997 Civic EX MPG increase?
Wondering to see how I can increase my MPGs in my car, it's just a DD so I don't care much about going fast in it, nor do I really need the gas savings, more like something to tinker with while my other car is being rebuilt.
Ive already got a short ram intake, got rid of the stock steelies, and my driving style is on par with economy. Right now with a blend of city and highway I get anywhere from 29-31 depending on if I do decide to ever get on it (sometimes the VTEC kick sounds cool haha)
Any ideas? I don't want to start hacking up the car and doing crazy aero stuff like the hypermilers. I might put a vaccum gauge in it so I can monitor more stuff while I drive but I don't know where I'm going to put it, no pillar pods for my liking.
Thanks!

What did you replace your stock steelies with? Smaller, lighter wheels with thinner tires will give you better fuel economy due to less road friction and a reduced unsprung weight. Unfortunately, that'll also completely fry your handling and stopping power.
You should be getting better gas mileage from your car than that, though. When was your last full tune-up? I would start by replacing your plugs, fuel filter, rotor, and cap.

just adjust your driving. i am getting 34-37 in my 4 door integra. don't go too much faster than the speed limit, light throttle inputs. i am going to switch it to obd1 and tune it, i bet i can easily see over 40.
Points 1 and 2 are correct. Point 3 has been proven to be wasteful. You want to keep as much distance between you and large trucks as possible. In order to gain anything from drafting a truck (or any vehicle for that matter), you have to be right up their bumper. Go just a hair too far away, and you'll actually have less fuel efficiency than you would on an open highway.

I would say before 4k. The throttle opening is more of a factor than rpm i think. Still a tune up seems to be in order. I drive a 00 ex 5spd, in the 4 years ive owned i dont think ive been under 33mpg. I beat on it pretty good but also take care of it.
Also Kyden is right with the speed limit. If you do the speed limit everywhere all the time youll notice an increase in mpg. As long as your not WFO to get there!
I usually shift it before 3000. I saw online someone on another site recommended like 2000rpm, I just tried it on my way to lunch and almost got killed haha
Oh come on guys - I shift my tall geared HX at 2K and I run fine - well with the flow of traffic. Going up a grade I may hold it to 2500-2800 turns. Down a grade I'll skip a gear or two. I hit 40+ mpg all week long. Keeping it >3K is excessive if you're trying to increase your mpg.
Try this it's a whole way of driving but I get 40 mpg with my eg

OK so I tried shifting it at under 2500rpm and it works well, the other day it was over 100 degrees here so I think that made the car feel slower.
Any other tips? Things I can do to the car to get it to run more efficiently?

What do you have your tires inflated to? A lot of the guys at Ecomodder run at 50 psi. I raised mine close to 40 I think. Also, when I replaced my tires, I went for low rolling resistance Kumhos. How's your alighnment? Do you have a bunch of stuff in your backseat or trunk?
Driving style has a great deal to do with it. It may take you some time to get used to shifting early. 5th gear is your friend!

I grabbed these from there -
I. Thou shalt slow down.
II. Thou shalt keep a record of thy mileage.
III. Thou shalt use a fuel mileage display.
IV. Thou shalt look ahead.
V. Thou shalt drive such that the use of thy brakes is minimized.
VI. Thou shalt plan thy routes carefully ahead of time.
VII. Thou shalt check thy tire pressure and keep them high.
VIII. Thou shalt not go through drive-thus nor shall thou idle excessively.
IX. Thou shalt not make trips thou dost not have to.
X. Thou shalt not haul around stuff thou dost not have to.

Changed my driving habits and last 2 have been 33.4 and 34.4. Ultragauge works really cool in this car, I had to calibrate for my wheels and tires but it's pretty accurate. Last tank when in reality I got 34.4 the gauge showed an average of 35.5. At least gives you an idea of what to do and what not to do, as long as you keep the mpg up on the gauge, you'll be keeping it up in reality.
those ultraguages or scangauge whichever you get are AWESOME! seeing what your instant mpg is, is a great help at getting better gas mileage.
also when your decelerating, keep your car in gear until it gets to 1000rpm. when you are in gear giving no throttle, your injectors aren't even firing and the tires rolling is keeping the engine running. in 5th gear i get 1000rpms right around 30mph so i keep it in gear until then when i'm coming to a stop. same with any other gear at 1000 rpms.
read through those hypermilling driving advice.
although i disagree with spare removal. i'd rather keep the extra 20-30 lbs and have a back up than be completely stuck somewhere. and fix-a-flat is a joke and will ruin your tire and possibly wheel. (i work at discount tire)
i get about 45-50mpg per tank. although i also have a vx which helps greatly. i do know my ignition timing isn't pefect so i'm hoping to see easy 50's after i get it fine tuned.
also basic maintenance will help as well. make sure all fluids are good, plugs, wires, iginition timing, valve lashing, etc

put a can of seafoam through brake booster, fuel tank, engine oil (1/3rd a can 1/3 1/3)
change spark plug and wires.. and!!!!!!! I changed my primary o2 sensor and noticed a big difference in mpg.
this along with fresh air filters and fuel filters and getting colder air into your engine.. (be careful with cold air intake you could suck up water)
my 99 civic DX auto with 96k miles on it gets right around 28 city / 33-34 highway MPG

Last fillups with new driving habits and ultragauge
33.4mpg
34.5mpg
35.5mpg
38.2mpg (mostly highway this time)
Also started using LubeControl LC20 and FP60 so we'll see what effect that has on the figures in a little while.

you can take out the back seat, passenger front seat, remove extra cargo in trunk(including oem jacks and spare wheel)
