Quiz.. What to do first?
This question was posted in another forum so i though i would ask the same questions to see what you guys think. so here it is
Let's say you're building up a project car to race. Which mods do you do first and which last? Take the mod list below and arrange them in the order you think they should be done (and you have to give a reason why you picked that order).
- engine (HP increases)
- brakes
- suspension (springs, shocks)
- safety (seats, harness, fire extinguisher)
- wheels & tires
- drivetrain (transmission, clutch, axles, rear-end)
- chassis (roll cage, strut bars)
Note: If you ask any race teams, you'll get pretty much the same answer from all of them, so there is a correct answer.

imo...
- safety (seats, harness, fire extinguisher) - roll cage falls under this
- wheels & tires
- brakes
- suspension (springs, shocks)
- engine (HP increases)
- chassis (strut bars)
- drivetrain
?
edit: add drivetrain

Step 1:
cage
killswitch
brakes
harnesses
Done. You now have a basic racecar.
Step 2:
suspension
tires
Now your car should be pretty fast for it's class.
Step 3:
engine mods, appropriate to race series
Now it should be REALLY fast.

I'm in the middle of building a racecar on a budget. My order was:
-cage
-harness
-seat
-fix/replace broken stuff
-stuff to meet the rules
-suspension
-tires
-pile of parts waiting for action

While my car is still a street car I'm going:
Wheels/tires
Suspension
Brakes
Rollbar
Minor engine mods
Who knows what I'll do after that, H4 or H1... I guess it depends on how strong the engine is running and how much money I have to play with. Anyway, I think my order is pretty much right for what I'm planning on doing at the track.

You'd be surprised how many people come in here and say "I want to start [insert "autocrossing" or "roadracing" here]. What mods should I do first?
They never even realize how much potential a stock car has - or how much they can learn from a stock car.

You would think, but the goofy stuff that a lot of us spend our $$ on suggest that maybe we should hear it again. And again. And again...

1)safety has to be first, including the cage. If you aren't smart enough to figure that out, I hope you get injured in a way that will keep you from reproducing.
2)wheels and tires. No matter what you do to the car, it only makes contact with the ground in 4 places - the tires. If they suck, everything else is a waste of time.
3)brakes. You have to be able to stop it. Speed is no good when you go flying off in turn 1.
4)suspension. oh what a difference that makes....
5)engine. Once the other things are sorted out, THEN you go for more power.
6)other drivetrain - meaning LSD I'm assuming.
7)strut bars, and other fine tuning crap
